Patch 2.2.5 is now available with the following improvements :

    • Internal mesh generation code is no longer invoked when the meshes are out of view
    • New scaling helper setting for meshes without proper bone weights (available by enabling Beta Mode /Force Lossy Scale)
    Have a great weekend ! :)

Is there a recommended setting for TAA? Unity 2020 and newer have a few settings designed to stop ghosting. However, with short fur (and doing a png recording) we get some strange waves in the fur.

    Hi there,

We ask you to please contact us through our support email with more information about this to take a look into it, however, please be aware that TAA does not interact with XFur Studio (as we have said before, and in the description of the asset) since the fur generated by XFur Studio is not strand based and as such there are no motion vectors generated to simulate the strands, which makes TAA not able to pick up the fast moving details clearly enough.

We are not sure if the issue you describe is related to this, and that's why we ask you to please get in touch with us through the support email to be able to take a more in-detail look at it.

    Have a great day!

How can I change the renderQueue?
I need to tweak the draw order to get the fur to draw after AO.
Happy to modify the code, but it's a bit complicated to reverse-engineer without guidance.

    Hi there,

The easiest way would be to go to your XFur Database asset and check there the fur material sub assets. You should be able to adjust the Render queue from there without any problems. If you need further assistance, please feel free to contact us through our support email.

    Have a nice weekend!

There are some big updates coming to XFur Studio 2 later this month and over the month of September. However, we will start with a small patch to fix a current issue with Universal RP in Unity 2020.3 and the new Ambient Occlusion filter.

This patch will be available before the end of the week :)

    Have a great week everyone!

And the patch has been approved and released. This fix only works on Unity 2020.3 (as this is the first LTS release with Ambient Occlusion marked as stable!). We hope it will help :)

    Hi there,

Please send your support request to our support email with your invoice number attached, the process you followed to add XFur Studio Instance to your model (normally, it should not be attached to the skin mesh renderer) as well as which Unity version and rendering pipeline you are using.

While we are still away from our office, sending your support request now is the best way to ensure you can get a solution faster.

    Have a great day!

When I go to your website, there is no "support email." There is only a form page that will not let me submit - the captcha widget on the site is non-functional, and prevents anyone from submitting.

Can you please send your support email address? I would also suggest fixing the captcha widget.

    Thanks.

    Hi there,

On our end, the form is working without any issues (as well as the captcha widget) as tested on all our devices and browsers, but we will look into it. It may be a browser related issue rather than a website related one.

Our support email is available in your documentation file included with the asset (we suggest you to read it thoroughly as it contains most common fixes and step by step guides on how to use the software) and is support at irreverent-software dot com

    We hope this helps

    Hi there!

Right before the end of the year we released a small Beta update for XFur Studio that we are quite excited about, which is a Standalone Version of the Standard Pipeline XFur shaders. This means that these shaders can be used without any additional scripts.

To try them out, you just need to unpack them :

    upload_2022-1-20_21-23-31.png

They have some limited features (no weather VFX, decals nor physics support, incorrect shadows in forward rendering) but they are useful for situations where using additional scripts is impossible and you need a shader only version of the fur.

This feature is available only in the Standard (or Legacy /Built-in) pipeline.

We will have a more extensive documentation for this new feature very soon!

A new version of XFur Studio 2 has been released, with a highly improved UV padding algorithm that will reduce visible gaps in most cases, for most models. It is available right now in the asset store.

A new update is being developed as well to allow for custom tiling and offset to be applied to the color and normalmaps of your models in an axes independent manner. As of right now, tiling is applied with the same value on both X and Y axes.

Also, the Asset Refresh sale is about to end so make sure to grab your copy of XFur Studio 2 - URP Edition with a 50% off while you still can!

    Figured out part 1.. deleted.

Is there something special I need to do to move around in the Designer? Bought the Bison as well, can't interact with it.

PS - Just read the entire thread and I'm no closer to figuring out how to use Designer. Nothing personal, but you're a broken record about invoice number. Every time you send someone to support no one else learns how to fix problems or better understand. Bought XFur2 less than 6 hours ago. IN010002476492

    Hi there,

We ask you to please contact us to our support email with all the details so that we can help you in a more efficient way. We have done some tests with Designer and the new input system, but we'll need additional information to be sure.

Please send us the following information:

    Unity version
    Invoice number

You should be able to move around and work with the mouse only. We will look into this situation and see if there are further fixes and updates to make to XFur when working with the New Input System. If you are experiencing issues, probably switching to either "Both" or the old input system may help you in the meantime.

    We hope this helps!

EDIT : we ask you to please remove your invoice number from the post and send it in a PM or better yet to our support email. We only provide general pre-purchase answers in the forums alongside patch news, all other support requests, no matter how simple or difficult, are responded only through email to both verify ownership of a valid license and avoid cluttering the thread.

Thanks for your understanding, we look forward to receiving your email and assisting you. Have a great weekend

A small patch fixing a number of bugs with the latest releases of URP will be available within the next 5-7 days. Among other things, it ensures a more reliable Undo process and adds a few more graphical settings for URP.

    Cheers!

    Hey @IrrSoft

Been long users of the XFur Studio 1 at our studio for our first released game and loved it. So we are continuing with XFur 2 for our new project (since we are on HDRP and 1 doesn't support it)

But before purchasing licenses I have some questions:

1.1) I know you offer support only for LTS releases on SRP (we are actually in the process of releasing some graphics tools ourselves and we are considering the same since it makes most sense) - however, are there any chances the current XFur2 version would work on 2022.1, or possibly 2022.2 without major breaking? We had to start our project on 2022.1 to get rid of some HDRP issues that were solved with it, and we aim to lock on 2022.3LTS at some point, but we kinda need the fur rendering ASAP for promotional media. If it's trivial shader errors we can probably fix ourselves, but we don't have the time dig into complicated stuff rn. Have you or some other customer actually tested 2022.x out of curiosity and figured out it works/it doesn't work? Just so we know what we are getting into with this.

1.2) On the same note, how long would you think it would take to update XFur2 for 2022.3LTS once that Unity version gets shipped?

    2) Does XFur2 still use separate passes for each layer of fur? We've ran into drawcall/performance issues with these on XFur1 with dozens of animals on screen since skinned meshes can't be instanced/batched, and we had to do some aggressive fur culling to get rid of it back when we implemented XFur1 in our old project, but there was inconsistency between the fur lighting model and no fur/standard lighting model (on the same note is that improved in 2?)

    3) This might be a really far stretch, but does by any chance XFur2 supports tessellation subdivision with phong smoothing? Or if not, would you think it would be trivial for us to add to the XFur2 shaders? We currently use it with the HDRP Lit placeholder materials on some of our lower-poly (small) animals to smooth their silhouette out in some cases when the player is really close to them (i.e. First Person butchering carcasses), but if not supported and not easy to add we can experiment with smoothing the source mesh and add a new closeup LOD rather than doing it on GPU based on triangle screen size.

    Thanks.

    Hi there!

Thank you very much for reaching out, we are glad to hear that you are a long time user and that you have been happy with our product so far. We will try to answer all your points as well as we can :

    1) While we only offer official support for LTS versions (this means we can only guarantee we'll review support requests for LTS versions, otherwise we would be forever trying to play catch up with the latest beta / alpha releases of URP /HDRP) we and a few other users have tested XFur Studio 2 on HDRP with Unity 2022.1.x without any issues, and we expect the same to be true for 2022.2 unless there are some major changes to HDRP

1.2) It usually takes us between one and two weeks to add support for a new LTS release (this includes any necessary patches, testing and then the upload / approval process on the Asset Store). If a new LTS releases and there are no updates from us in 2 weeks you can reach out and we will inform you whether we are still working on the update or if an update is not necessary at all and everything works without issues. In most cases, the latter has been true.

    2) XFur Studio 2 uses a much improved method for rendering fur as our previous method was not compatible with URP / HDRP (they do not allow for simple multi-pass shaders). This time, each layer of fur is rendered through GPU Instancing which dramatically reduces draw calls and GPU stress. However, this came with the tradeoff of making XFur 2 slightly more CPU intensive while rendering the fur (everything else, like physics, snow and other effects have been moved to the GPU or heavily optimized), as getting a skinned mesh ready for GPU instancing is not free.

Depending on the hardware / amount of creatures, XFur Studio 2 should run considerably better than version 1 and with a higher visual quality. The XFur LOD module has also been improved and should allow further optimization. In general, we have noticed that HDRP runs (without XFur) considerably slower than other pipelines, but the performance impact of XFur 2 is proportionately the same on every pipeline, and lower than the impact of XFur Studio 1.

With our new rendering system, fur is rendered separately form the meshes original material so you can adjust as necessary to make both materials fit. And the shaders are ShaderGraph based shaders so tweaking should be far easier than in version 1 if adjustments become necessary.

    3) Tessellation would not be possible since rendering is done through instancing. GPU Instancing + Tessellation is not, as far as we are aware, possible in Unity. XFur Studio 2 has been designed to work easily with LODs though, so this should not be too much of a problem.

On an additional note, XFur Studio 2 (as expressed on the asset store page) does not render fur to the motion vectors pass and as such, it may not work entirely well with motion-vector based motion blur / Temporal Anti-Aliasing.

    We hope this helps!

(and out of curiosity, may we know in which game you used XFur Studio 1? We'd love to know and check it out :) )

Thank you for the detailed response.

    1) Awesome, picking up XFur2 right now and will experiment with integrating in the upcoming days. Will report back soon of any good/bad findings.

    2) That also sounds good. So I suppose upgrading to XFur2 would also yield performance benefits in our old project? Are the old fur/grooming masks compatible with XFur2 by any chance or would we have to repaint them in order to upgrade an older project?

    3) Understandable, yeah instancing + tessellation has been a PITA for our inhouse shaders as well, we had to come up with lots of clever hacks for LODing closeup tessellation and instanced meshes in the past. We will try to handle subdivision and smoothing at the LOD/Mesh side then for closeups. Will look into automating it possibly.

Our released project is Northern Lights :D Unfortunately the release ended up bad (mostly because it was our first commercial game release and even though some of us had a solid background in software/graphics dev, at that time we were just a startup company with no prior game dev experience, that didn't know how to proper handle PR, QA/Performance Testing etc. of such a big project) - we eventually turned the game around in terms of technical/gameplay problems but it still ended in Steam's store visibility limbo because of the bad sales and reviews in its first months after release. But well, we learn from mistakes ^^

1 ) Sure! If you have any issues please make sure to reach us out at our support email with your invoice number and all information and we'll get back to you ASAP.

    2) We have a small upgrade guide in our documentation but because of the many, many differences in both versions it is likely that it will require a repaint. XFur Studio 2 handles grooming in a much more precise manner, but some of the main fur map data may be upgradeable.

And such a pity hearing that the launch was not as you wanted with your previous game, first games are really difficult (we are on a first commercial game of our own). We'll try to check it out though, because it does look really nice!

    1) Got it, awesome!
    2) Will ask our artist to look into it, if he got the time maybe we will upgrade Northern Lights as well then. Thanks!

And thank you for the kind words! Hope your game project turns out well!

    Hi there,

We have not tested the asset with this VR headset, so we cannot guarantee it will work. We however have tested it extensively with mobile systems and AR so if the HTC Vive Focus 3 has a processor equivalent to a higher end mobile phone, XFur Studio 2 should work on it (provided you do not make too many extreme close ups as this tends to lower performance on mobile and AR).

We would probably recommend using Built-in for development towards Android / mobile / standalone VR however, as in our experience it tends to run a bit faster.

Hello, I just checked, I definitely didn't get it. To confirm, my email is katsub.dev@gmail.com, perhaps there was a typo in the form / reply recipient? I just sent an email to the support email address I had from you guys from some years ago, maybe that'll help clear that issue up :)

    Hi there,

Just checked your new email and yes, there was a typo (mail instead of gmail) in the original form you filled. We have replied already to your support request. Judging by the video though, maybe you should check that Reload Scene (in the Editor settings of your project) is not disabled, as that feature sometimes causes issues with XFur and other Editor plugins.

A new update has been released for XFur Studio that should help solving some issues when Reload Domain is enabled and Scene Reloading disabled (in the Editor Settings of a project), which prevented some XFur Studio 2 resources from being properly loaded.

    We hope it will help!

A patch for XFur Studio 2 (version 2.6.5) fixing a small bug when changing the number of cameras in a scene has been released.

I bought this asset but it doesn't seem to like my M1 mac. Has anyone had success running it under these conditions? It sends the fans into VTOL mode and prevents the editor from saving (causes the process to hang); had to completely remove from the project just to be able to continue work.

On a separate note, how does it perform on iPhone 10 and newer iOS devices?

    Hi there,

We haven't personally tested the system on Mac / iOS as we do not own any Apple devices. However, many of our customers have used the system on Mac and iOS without issues. We would recommend you to use URP if you are targeting mobile but to stick to LTS releases as well.

As for final performance, it depends entirely on the final screen resolution, amount of fur covered characters, polygon counts, % of the screen covered with fur etc. so there is no definite answer we can give on this. On Android devices (Xiaomi 8) we have tested AR demos with 5-10 instances of the little fox character (Holly) with good and stable framerates, as long as the resolution is downscaled slightly.

    We hope this helps!
