Hahaha! C'mon, I don't think this is full of win, it's rather full of hate instead! Hate for... 'noob' stereotype, am I right? Why on earth would someone waste time on that? I'll tell you when I'll be full of win... when I actually finish a game, haha!

All one needs to do is pick a random post from the collaboration sub-forum then cut-and-paste.

Well, using one directional light is fine for dynamic shadows. If, say, you're doing a day/night cycle, or want moving objects to cast shadows. There are plenty of actual real games which do this, you know, it's not stupid. ;)

No. No respectable 3D game uses 1 directional light. Just like photography, there's usually at least two directional lights and an ambient light.

Yes, respectable games use 1 directional light. Rim lighting for characters is built into the shaders. Ambient "light" isn't an actual light, it's just a color value.

All lighting is an approximation and all lighting is built into shaders.

It's meant to be ironic, not technically impossible :) The point is that even with shadows, his game would look like junk. Maybe I should have said "using default directional light".

@charliesamways: I actually saw something like that on these forums, once. This guy had a huge elaborate plan for a game, listing about 10 major features that, individually, would be a challenge for a AAA studio. He basically said "My only problem is that it needs a name."
To make matters even worse, he had posted a topic only a few days prior where he asked somebody to make an image for him. It wasn't even anything complex, just text on top of a background.

Yes...but you're missing the point. Ambient lighting is just a single value and doesn't require the calculations that a light source does. Rim lighting built into a shader requires no light sources.

Quite possibly ;), but not because of just using 1 directional light. It's not so unusual; most things are baked, and then you use a directional light for dynamic lighting. Would be funnier if it was something like "I getz Unity Pro. Then I use shadows, makes everything awesum."

First, Ambient lighting has two values, color and intensity. They are represented by a vector. Second, even if you have hard coded rim lights for your characters into your shaders, you are *STILL* using more than 1 light source. I'm not sure you understand what a 'light source' really is. Its just a mathematical representation of a light (color, position, intensity, direction, angle, etc). If you use any of those parameters in your shader (which you certainly will, if you have rim lights), then you have a light source. It just doesn't affect all objects.

You're just arguing for the sake of arguing. Yes, I know what a light source is; I've written a few pixel shaders.

    That's what I'm talkin' 'bout. ;)

    Bah. Here:

Once again, the point wasn't the technical nature of one direction light, but the infuriating attitude of "I need a light. *drags white directional light into the scene* Looks flat. I need shadows."

You do realize that you are changing the conversation, correct?

Eric5h5 wasn't responding to a comment about how many different techniques were used to light the scene, or even how many light sources. He was commenting on how many directional light sources - based on context, we can even say he was commenting on how many real-time, directional, shadow casting light sources many games use. In the context of his original comment yes, many - many 3D games use only a single directional light source.

You can't just change the conversation to talk about something entirely different (how many components come together to make the illusion of light); it makes absolutely no sense in context. Now you are being downright condescending while not even discussing what Eric was commenting on.

I'm sorry you were wrong, I really am - but perhaps you should go re-read the comments you replied to and make sure you actually understand what Eric was talking about, not just what you wish he was talking about.

Here, let me refresh your memory.

See? One directional, shadow casting, real-time light.

Then you respond with the immediately erroneous comment:

    To which he replies, correctly:

To which you reply, in such a way as to show an extreme misunderstanding of what is even being discussed:

    ...

Do you get what I'm saying here? Follow your own conversation, simply changing what is being debated to try and sound like you know what's being discussed is incredibly childish. There is no debate, you are simply incorrect; countless "self respecting" 3D games use only a single dynamic, shadow casting, directional light.
