Hello everyone! I recently purchased a package from the asset store. It is fairly small in size at about 500mb. However, it is taking hours to import, where no other asset has taken this long to import - even ones that were upwards of 2-3gb. I have disabled compress assets on import in preferences and it didn't improve, unfortunately. Running on Unity 2018.2.11f1. Does anybody have a solution? Thanks!

Have you contacted the Asset developer?

    Hello! Yes, I have.
    They said this:

"Try import this asset in empty project.

Сontact the Unity technical support if nothing happened. We are powerless in this matter.

    Thanks!"

I tried in an empty project, I also used a different Unity version, but unfortunately, it gives the same results

I don't see anything particularly out of the ordinary or errors, it seems to have imported cleanly - it just takes a very long time.
Here's one of the textures being imported

    Code (CSharp):
    1. Updating Assets/GHC_FX/Textures/AtlasBlood/T_AtlasBlood_15_n.png - GUID: 6bdfb699a8688264fbdf2f45a1349ba9...
    2. done. [Time: 3555.540300 ms]
    3. Updating Assets/GHC_FX/Textures/Splashes/T_Blood_Splash_5.png - GUID: 6d5886fee30c2e74ebfbf0e6244b33dc...
    4. done. [Time: 161338.539600 ms]
    5. Unloading 37 Unused Serialized files (Serialized files now loaded: 0)
    6. System memory in use before: 365.8 MB.
    7. System memory in use after: 365.9 MB.
    8.
and it's basically this time frame (3 minutes) for lots of individual textures.

    I'm on an i9-7900x, 32GB DDR4 @ 3200MHZ.

@jroma17171 try taking the check off "Compress Assets on Import" and see if things don't get imported faster.
But keep in mind, that your first build will take longer.

I normally do keep "Compress Assets on Import" checked. But I did notice things did get very slow for me as well with Unity 2018.3.0b11. Like Gaia normally could get installed in under 20 min. But this last time it took close to 45 min to import into an empty project in Unity 2018.3.0f1.

Another thing I saw in the forums by another user having this problem is they added some folders to the exclusions of their virus protection program. I personally don't like doing that. The user said the "Unity" folder, but was not clear which one because I've got a Unity folder under "Program Files" and others under AppData. But again I'm always hesitant to add exclusions to my virus protection.

    hi @JeffDUnity3D

12+ hours later I'm still importing assets.. Is there a faster way?

Unity wasn't loading for me so I deleted my shadercache, metadata folders. :(

    I'm on 2018.4.6f1

There is not really a way to update that on your side (easily). Contact the Asset Author and hope he has some ideas.

Otherwise: Try to contact the author of https://assetstore.unity.com/packages/tools/particles-effects/aura-2-volumetric-lighting-fog-137148 who has a lot of experience with optimizing Unity Imports, in particular shader variants. He has improved his Aura 2 Asset to import from hours to minutes. Maybe he is willing to share how he was able to do that or is interested in contract/consultancy work if this is for some paid project.

Ah! That's probably a part of the reason! I did remember Aura taking a really long time to import.. of course not 12+ hours. But probably Aura was compounding the import time. I bought Aura2 already, just need to move the entire pipeline over. Thanks for reminding me :)

Yup, exactly why I'm here, wanted to import it too to check it out.
I had to just quit the process because it's taking hours
