    Anyone have an idea on how this type of experience is created?
    Some combination of geolocation and image based targets or...?

    Yeah, you get GPS coords from the device, mix that with the compass and tilt sensors, and you can generally get an idea of what direction the user is "looking" with the camera. Then you can add some image matching of small reference tiles like known spires atop the building, known statue heads, etc., to fine-tune anything you want to display in the 2D space. If you want to draw things in 3D that appear to align with the real world shot in the camera, you have to do a little extra math to solve for a better virtual camera position.

    It's rarely as smooth and perfect tracking as that promo video shows, of course.
