Well, this new Zeiss VR & AR phone mounting headset for iPhone 6 and Galaxy S5 looks stylish. But how could you create a game without touch input?

Well, by using a paired gamepad.

We are using it in a game and it works very good.

Oh yes, I totally forgot that you can use controllers on iOS.

Sorry, I meant we are using such a vr device with a gamepad.

We use the durovis Dive and it is quite good in quality terms.

I heard that the durovis Dive SDK for Unity is bad in some ways. I do not have any hands on experience with the Durovis Dive. But I am very interested in Google Cardboard :)

You actually don't have to use their plugin (although they claim that they have resolved some gyro issues they had).

We use our own code in unity and works fine.

Here is something that may help you if you need it ofc. Google Cardboard toolkit on Github. Kudos to @HoverX

I got to say that it is pretty awesome - I am working on a small Cardboard game (The Art side At least)

    Thanks!

Although the gamepad gives the best input that you can get...

A low energy consuming leap motion mod for mobiles would be great however.

I've got hooked and want to test this. I've read a bit about different solutions and bought the ColorCross one for just 20,- EUR

Now I just need a cheap MFi controller for iOS - is there any cheap one? (I don't care about quality for such a test)

Seems ok. But the durovis one has better control of the lenses.

The durovis costs 2.5 times the price. I just don't wanted to go the cardboard way and I wanted it cheap. It's an experiment anyway.

I would bet the Zeiss is the best one but I don't have an iPhone 6. If I ever want to use this in a serious way I will test the Zeiss

If someone wanted to make a cardboard version of this, where would they get the lenses cheap?

I've actually got a Rift DK1 and DK2, so that's an option, but I was wondering where I'd get them otherwise. (Especially since I don't actually want to disable my Rifts.)

Maybe doing something like this with an iPhone panel instead of an iPad panel would be cool for development.

    http://emerythacks.blogspot.de/2013/04/connecting-ipad-retina-lcd-to-pc.html

You could use cardboard, put the panel into it (I saw iPhone5S panels for $20 on china websites), buy the lenses, add a cheap 3D air mouse motion sensor to the thing (saw some for 15,-) - then use it as second monitor with the Unity Editor's game view on it.

Because of this VR thing I've was thinking about a solution how to use a Mac gamepad with iOS.

It seems since iOS 8 the MFi bluetooth controllers have problems (lag and disconnection), this problem and the price tag of the MFi's is the reason why I was looking into those bluetooth keyboard based controllers like iCade for testing.

You need two Mac apps for my solution, a cheap one and a more expensive one. The developer of ControllerMate (the more expensive one) gave me a special code for Unity users today. Through the end of this month, a 20% discount will be applied when the coupon code UNITY is used. I already had this useful tool and it was one of the reasons why I had the idea for this solution.

It seems to work well with an iCade compatible plugin for Unity.

If we would have exactly the same game/app and run it via this type of device vs. the Rift is there a big difference in the experience?

I think not, but there are some differences between the two devices:
    - display resolution, only iPhone 6 or Galaxy S5 are supported (for now)
    - no input devices, no buttons or touch pad (like Gear VR)
    - no wires, no extra head tracker, everything runs on the phone
    - Zeiss(!) lenses

I was wearing the VR One for more than one hour and it still felt comfortable.
