Hey all hows it going. So me and my mate decided to test out unitys collaboration feature and we are in the process of making a 2D Battle Arena game. Now i had a question our studio is all about getting the input of other people and building upon that so heres my question.

When you hear the term 2D Battle Arena what do you expect out of the genre. Fast Action, Small Maps, Large Maps, A vast verity of weapons etc etc the list goes on.

So far my friend has been working on the shooting and weapon mechanics of the game and iv been working on making the game more moddable and the first step to this was to make a map editor / loader here is the progress on that so far(https://twitter.com/4WingedStudio/status/843093944699305985)

Followed you on Twitter. Nice to meet you.
For me I will immediately thinking of Digimon Rumble Arena as a Battle Arena genre.
Interesting environment (Will affect game-play) and unlockable characters are my suggestion.
Always like to play games that has tons of secret / easter egg / gimmick and unlockable.
Which will let me spend more time on it to fully 100% complete the whole game.:)

Is CRAWL considered a 2D battle arena game?
Provide some examples of this specific genre.

Games like "mario smash bros brawl" its pretty much a game where there is a small - medium size map that can hold 2 - 4 players and they battle it out the last one standing wins.

Thanks for the follow. Yes the plan for the game is to have a heap of characters to select from an a custom shop that allows you to purchase elements for your own weapon doing this means you can create your very own unique weapon that no one else in the game has.

Nothing, because as soon as someone says "battle arena" I lose interest. It's basically like saying "my game is only multiplayer PvP," which I don't much care for.

Not that there's anything wrong with that; there are plenty of games I don't like in the world, and plenty of players who like them. But if your game has other options besides multiplayer PvP, calling it a "battle arena" means I probably won't even look at it long enough to know about them.

Fair point everyone is entitled to like there own game genres. Yes the main game play of the game will be Multiplayer. How ever the aim for this project is to try and get a modding community out of it. I am trying to make the game as moddable as possible.

Personally, no idea what a battle arena is. From your description it sounds like most games... some kind of area to move around in, give the players a bunch of weapons and a control system, let them go at it. Yawn. What are you going to bring to it that is interesting mechanic-wise or fun gameplay?

I actually think that highly moddable games are the high point of the industry.

It's really not a coincidence that many of the newer genres of game and many of the most loved games started as mods: Dota/Lol, Counter Strike, Team Fortress, tower defense, dayz, etc.

A live mod community can extend the lifetime of a game by years and years (mount and blade).

Well, I'm always open to anything.

When you said "Battle Arena" I thought you meant a MOBA like LoL and DoTA.

But a Smash Bros game is also cool.

Make sure to give some other games like it a try so you know what's out there.

Power Stone is a must. 1 and 2 are two completely different games and both were AMAZING! The core mechanics that made it word was the use of everything in the room as a weapon like it's a Jackie Chan fighting game. Also, the Stones gave players something to scramble for. And there were lots of environmental hazards that would force players to change up the flow of battle.

Sony's All-Star Battle is a great example of what NOT to do. That game sucks out loud.

And there's also a Smash Bros clone with Optimus Prime in it, but the name escapes me and I'm too lazy to look it up.

Thanks for all the feed back guys!
Currently the main game play is going to be fighting it out player vs player in community made maps. The plan for the ability's for each player will be as follows. There will be a shop to buy new ability's players can only equip 2 ability's at a time. This could be something as simple as a double jump to something strong like a stun or a laser that is able to shoot through the entire map killing anything instantly how ever that power up would only be of one use per game.
We plan to have a verity of different players to select from as well as different weapons and ability's. So far we don't have much of either since we are trying to look for a 2D artist(If anyone is interested pm me.).
