The concept art looks nice but I personally won't be funding this one. The big issue I am having with it is that the yogcast guys make videos, they don't know anything about making games ! They are inexperienced and I don't find that very comforting. Anyways, despite that, I wish you good luck with your project !

Did u guys really really read the kickstarter page? It said clearly that none of those two will code or do 3d art...

There's more to making games than coding or drawing.

I funded it because it looks interesting, but I have to admit it's one of my more iffy choices.

Like Wccrawford says there is more to it than coding or art. You also have to read between the lines...

Since the yogscast are the ones with the money/fund, they will end up making all the big decisions about something they don't have a clue about. On top of that, I have nothing against Winterkewl games, but they never made a game before so they are inexperienced as well. A little research on google shows that : "The CEO of "Winterkewl" is an Ex-Sony Pictures CGI artist with zero experience of game development." All of this doesn't bode well for such an ambitious project.

Don't get me wrong, I like the Yogscast guys, but they make enough money from their videos and websites to self fund their project. Did they really need a kickstarter in the first place ? They could have first made the game, then sold it to their fans, and made the money if they were serious about it, because they have lots of fans; or they could have made at least a solid alpha build to assess the potential of the game and prove that even if the devs are inexperienced they can get the job done before even considering a kickstarter.

Why would they make a kickstarter and hire inexperienced people for such a big project ? Now Yogcast can blame Winterkewl if the project ever fails or does not meet quality expectations without damaging their own reputation. On top of that, the money invested for their little "experiment" will have been money from the fans and not from their own pockets so its an investment they can commit to easily I would dare say. Now I voiced my opinion on all of this. I really do hope I am wrong even if the odds are against them and I still wish them luck with their project !

Well you certainly aren't alone in your concerns Patapouffe, but I'm saddened by just how much negative cynicism there is in the world sometimes. I posted here because I thought other Unity developers might find it cool that our game was being done on this incredible engine. . .

The overwhelming response by the fans thus far has been nothing but warm and positive and though we haven't made a game before we will make this game and it's going to be awesome! I've blogged about the experience so far http://kristafer.blogspot.com if anyone is interested.

    Thanks. :)

Long time fan here. The game seems like a great idea and very ambitious. I'd like to help support it if I could. Im impressed with what you guys have so far and its awesome to see it being done with Unity. Looking forward to seeing more updates.

Good luck guys this is awesome.

I personally prefer the style of you concept art rather than what I see in the video.

...but along the veins of your stated goals. Here are some links that might help further you towards your goals (given the amount of your funding maybe you can work out a deal to collaborate):

    Both are works in progress.

Thanks for the links! Yeah we're going to be constantly massaging the final look of the game to get it as close to our art director's vision as we can.

    Thanks!

Well good luck, you've got alot of funds still yet to raise by May 9th. That you've got more than 50% of your funding says alot about your concept and marketing.

It's a really cool idea and I hope it gets done. But seriously? $250k? What the heck are you spending it on? And also, according to a few sites, the yogscast YouTube revenue is around $4,000,000 a year, why do you need funding?

I'd expect they don't make that much money from the videos but you have to remember what they do earn is used to fund there living and working. Which I'd imagine for a channel as big as there is very expensive. I hope they manage to make this project work as it does seem like a neat idea however to me it seems like a huge ambitious scope which is going to be hard to achieve. Also Alex95 $250k is very little for a game to be made considering the costs involved.

250k is a drop in the bucket compared to all the developers that we really need. And the speculation of the Yogscast's earnings are greatly and wildly incorrect. Even very small games take a lot of time and effort to make and what we are planning with this game isn't at all small.
    Thanks!

Yeah I think figures like that throw a lot of people off because they seem like a lot to a single person but when you consider development teams of highly skilled individuals being paid at least for 1 year of work you realise its just really not a lot. I wish you guys the best of luck with the game, the Yogs guys do great content and a lot of people like them so you'll have no trouble raising the money for the project and its always nice to have more people using Unity for large projects.

So basically, you're being ripped off. Since these guys will not take any part in developing, they're just unnecessary. They're not paying you (that's what Kickstarter's for) so why should you develop this game for them?

You could make the exact same game yourself, without two morons to drag along.

There is no doubt that yogscast are earning $4,000,000 a year. They almost have 1,000,000,000 views, that's a lot of money for YouTube.

For the guy above: Learn about business. He's paying them for the brand image. Without it, there'd be no point in making the game.

Its obvious that it is a business/marketing thing ! Its totally normal thing to do.

They could, but how would an unknown studio they get the funding ? How would they get visibility without it ? None would know about the game and they wouldn't have the money to do it. Because its the Yogcast, the people are funding it and more people know about it which means more money in the end.

The Yogcast guys are good friends with the guys at Winterkewl that's why they picked an unknown studio to make their game. Its a friend helping another friend. They get brand image and in the process they get to help their friends' unknown studio get into the game industry and become more popular. Two birds with one stone. I just wish I had popular friends on youtube and the internet too haha !

Congrats guys! Looks beautiful! I'm not associated with the project, but for anyone wondering, they're using my Voxelform package which is available in the Unity Asset store.

You can take a look at a playable demo here:
    http://cyclopsframework.org/voxelform/v3/

The demo requires a quad-core system with a mid-range GPU. If you'd prefer to watch a video demonstration instead, you can find that here:

Note that this is an unreleased build and not the shipping product that's seen in the their video.

I wouldn't sweat the skepticism, winterkewl. Theres a lot of dreamers in the world of unity game dev (seriously, I always get a laugh out of the "we're 15yos and we are building an MMO! posts"), but honestly the gap between dreams and delivery can be stuffed with money, and it looks like you guys are going to get the money to do what you need to do. $250K, gives you guys about $30K a month to play with, and thats enough for a small team to do what it needs to do. Go and hire an experienced project lead, and you'll do it.
