My favorite game of this year is the last one I played Subnautica.* The sound is amazing and it is very atmospheric. The bad thing is it's quite hard to find all the things you need like minerals. Sometimes the scenery pops in but that doesn't bother me too much. It's nice just to swim around.

Other games I rated were Doki Doki Literature club - an interesting concept in games which is hard to talk about without spoilers.

Well that's about it. I didn't play much this year!

Welp, I guess I have to play Frog Detective now.

My favorites of this year are:

    Return of the Obra Dinn
    Exapunks

    Honorable mentions:
Gris is kind of cute and I had some fun with Into the Breach, but it feels like something is missing from that game.

    Except it's not a game. :D
(Okay, technically it's a game, but it's more likely an art piece than a game. I didn't enjoy it at all, when I tried the "game" always took control, it's slow like a drunken sloth after a dubstep-party in the morning)

Did you play it all the way through? What you’re describing is partially accurate only for the first 30 minutes or so.

Eventually it introduces a bunch of mechanics and the levels are pretty elaborate. It’s as gamey as games get.

I just realized I haven't played a single game released in 2018. I'll (((check out))) Frog Detective.

Unfortunately I fell asleep after 10 minutes. The artwork is cool though.

Damn you Frog Detective, not in the Steam winter sale!

I kind of like games where it looks like not too long has been taken over the art style. Thinking about artists toiling for days to get every pixel just right makes me sad. :(

Well, you may not like it even if you played it more, so I don’t want to give you a hard sell, but it gets much more involved and complex as it goes on.

    Yeah, and if I got $100 I can 50 $2 games or 20 $5 games.

I will get it anyway since its Christmas. And I like to support frog genre games.

Mine's FTL, since I played it during 2018 and will in a moment, so that's my GOTY. I don't see why I can't just make GOTY whatever year I'm playing the bloody thing.

Because that's not a game of the year, that's a game of the moment.

My favourite is going to have to be the nuclear tech update in Factorio. Rounds the whole game off nicely.

I've only got vanilla, I honestly think the free update degraded the experience. It basically added a whole lot of microing to the economy, for no real gain in game play.

@Ryiah, did you play "The Forest?" I tried but found it pretty irritating after about an hour.

The Long Dark came out of EA this year for consoles. As far as I'm concerned, that's the best survival game across the board to date, and it's an indie unity title.

Beyond that, most everything I tried this year was disappointing. I don't think I've played a single new game that I really got into. Shenmue Remastered came out and was a nice trip down memory lane. Though to be fair if I didn't have fond memories of it from childhood I probably would have thought it was awful. Still, gameplay aside, it's nice to play a slow game with real charm and character.

Well it's been a moment for a few years so it's still my GOTY till I have more actual moments with a different game.

Only for a couple of hours and only a very early release. I disabled the cannibals and mostly just explored and played with the crafting mechanics. I remember being impressed by some aspects of the graphics (eg the waves in the ocean).

"Game of the year" specifically means games that came out that year because words mean things, hippocoder.

Yeah and it means the game of this year for me is FTL.

Because Game of the year is actually a phrase, and I'm fully aware what the phrase intends to be, and I don't think it's actually that important as a thing at all. But of course I'm liberal aren't I? I'm saying "it's okay to challenge a meaning". Unless you're not able to be that liberal and all must toe the line.

If you can't tell I've been doing funnies all along then just imagine me in a pond or something wearing a tutu, or not.
