So which is it? Would you consider you time as an investment or a cost?

I would consider my time as an investment because I do expect something from my app. Even if nothing comes out of this, in business terms it would just be considered a bad investment. At first I thought it was cost, but I feel like if I called it a cost, it would be something that's undesirable, but that's just my opinion. Let's discuss

The poll makes it seem like investment and cost are mutually exclusive. An investment will have a cost. Whether it is time, money, energy or whatever.

I see everything I do as an expense in terms of time and some of those are investments. The cost is unavoidable and inherit in anything (and nothing because time still ticks on). The investments are conscious decisions to use this block of time to work on a game, do some research, workout, hang out with family and friends, chill out and watch a movie and so forth.

An investment is defined as something you expect to produce a profit / result from. I guess as long as your endeavors aren't total failures then they aren't costs?

    Both, @GarBenjamin nailed it.

Moreover, why does it matter? Either way it's a resource and should be managed as such.

Does it matter? Good question. We're spending it 24/7 on cell division, which is killing us.

No, "wasted" doesn't just mean "gone".

In accounting terms an investment is simply a cost that can be deferred over several accounting periods. So if the reward from your time is instantaneous, consider it a cost. If the reward from your time is expected to pay back over several years, consider it an investment.
