I always thought it would be fun to have an FPS online game that has a set of basic art assets, but then mix and match the game mechanics and maps to be a sort of "greatest hits" collection of other games.

So let's say you could have the game mechanics and weapons from Quake 3, but then play on cloned map of Dust from Counter Strike.

Or mix an match from all of the most popular online FPS's like CS, Q3, TF2, CoD, BF, UT, L4D, Halo, Tribes, and so on.

Do you think that would be looked down on?

Do you think that a game like that could stay within the realm of "fare use"?

are you implying that you want to snake assets from other games and put them together to make a mash-up game?...

how could that possibly be within any galaxy of "fare use"?

No, I'm saying that I would like to see a game replicate iconic stages and weapons from classic games and mash them up.

None of the original art or files would be used.

I guess all games are just copies or building on previous games anyway.

I think just about every game or movie or even book, is based on the idea of "I want to take the best elements from that and combine it with the best elements from this." No need to explicitly state that on the product itself though, but I suppose you could.

If anything, map layouts might get you in hot water.

I don't think so. How is that any different from SNK making a Ryu clone?

Also, to be clear: I said I would like to SEE a game like this. I never said I wanted to be the one to make it.

It is not looked down if you make your own original artwork and all original coding.

    > mix an match from all of the most popular online FPS's like CS, Q3, TF2, CoD, BF, UT,

Will you be funding development of PBR AAA quality models, weapons and props? It costs lots of money for AAA models. Not sure if you want to do that...

Nah. You'd be a smash hit.

Now let's see you do it.

I would have thought that unless you were using actual textures taken from other games it would be really difficult to replicate the assets closely enough to achieve a copyright violation (unless you were using symbols such as insignias etc. from other games or extremely specific tools like the Portal gun for example (although I'm no sure if that could even be protected)). Whether it would be looked down upon, I guess that implies a value judgement, but if you're not actually thinking of making it then I guess it's moot. :0/

Theoretically, if you actual tried to recreate a game exactly, you might not even be able to get close enough to it to cause a violation (without using insignias, character names etc.)

A game that comes to mind is Project Eden (it's an old game) but it's like a Judge Dredd game that they just lost the licence to, right down to the Otto Sump food factory and the ABC warrior. If you look at how the textures and assets are re-configured to avoid copyright violation for Project Eden (Eidos) it might give you an idea of just how close you can get even to quite specifically unique I.P.s

Alternately, if you look at the Vietnam FPS cycle you can make a similar kind of assessment.

You couldn't do this because you couldn't do it. Get past that hurdle, first, then we can all discuss the legality of the virtually impossible.

I see the value in discussion and if it's being discussed it's implied that someone at least sees the value in discussing it.

If you don't see any value in it you're not forced to contribute.

Thanks for the hot tips on internet discussion etiquette. Having offended the majority of regulars here and had your first ever thread locked by one of the most lenient moderators I've ever seen... you should know.

Nice riddle... a discussion must have value if someone sees value in discussing it.

I've been thinking about this myself. What would it be like to take the best maps from the best fps' and bundle them together. I'm thinking Lockout, Blood Gulch,Last Resort and The Pit(Halo) with Terminal,Highrise,Nuketown and Favela(CoD) with de_dust2 and Facing towers. It would be a bundle of fun if you ask me

Hey, cool... now instead of wishing we don't exist you can make it a reality. Careful you don't wish everyone away though, then you'll just be talking to yourself. Assuming, of course, you aren't already. ;)

So, something like Super Maro Bros. Crossover but with FPS games?

Playing something like that would be freakin awesome but for the developer it'd most likely be a legalities nightmare.

This is actually an interesting idea, at least for a genre generally filled with zombies, military propaganda, and more zombies, though it will likely warrant an in-depth look into American parody law.

Learn about these, prepare a folder in your filing cabinet for them.

If you got one of these, what would you do?

The better route would be to only parody works you have expressed permission to parody from all the industry movers and shakers you know...

Doesn't matter how in depth you "look into law", these are things other people created and they will fight you every step of the way. Don't you get that these are actual people with money who can (edit: and will!) sue you?

No one is making light of intellectual property ownership. Actually, the better route is for the OP arrive to his own conclusions as to whether it's a worthwhile pursuit, acting only on the advice of actual legal professionals.

It doesn't matter whether you make light of it or think deeply and heavily about it. It doesn't matter if you consult legal professionals for their advice. It doesn't sound smart, it sounds like a lack of common sense. You can't use other people's intellectual property in 2015. You'll get caught and you'll get hammered. You'll get c&d letters and if you don't heed it you'll likely be sued. If you don't respond accordingly, you'll be served a default judgment at which point you should go purchase a lawn mower because your ass is grass. Not to mention, the moment legal action comes up you become toxic and nobody wants to touch you or your stuff.

Think... there's other ways to make games that don't tip-toe on the edges of illegality just for the lulz.

Be more sensible and have more awareness of people arriving to their own conclusions. No amount of ranting or astroturfing (in either direction) is helpful to either the OP's question or a person's own position on the matter.

If you just copy the game play and not the characters or the art go for it. You can get most of those games' gameplay by buying the right assets from the asset store and integrating.

Looks in Apps stores and make what others haven't that you enjoy yourself. Start with a modular design that you use assets for from the asset that are both good quality and that contribute towards your app / game where possible, knowing you'll have to alter and expand them to create something original. I've made a game I enjoy but it's hardly original, not even one of code that I wrote is in it but it's a very good starting point for what I want to do with a game.

    Don't worry about the rest.

If you're asking whether you're going to be allowed to post this question to the forum without being attacked by other random and not so random forum members then the answer is: you are going to be attacked by random and not so random forum members whatever you post, it's what they do and it's why they hang around in internet forums. The fact that they might also "do a bit of coding" is largely (really almost completely) beside the point.

They just make life difficult for everyone (accept themselves) because doing so makes them feel better.

@Not_Sure and (mostly) everyone else here, truly about ninety five percent of the people on this forum and viewing this forum would respond to you in a civil and rational manner and are reading this thread with at least academic interest (you just don't hear from them), it's just the remaining small percentage that shout loudest and longest and that people just don't want to have to deal with that can all too often set the tone for what would otherwise be just a simple discussion. Your question is completely valid and all I can do is urge you to use the forum's ignore function so as not to have to deal with the really quite grievous hostility.

These people aren't as they are because they're game developers or game coders, they just happen to be game developers and coders (and a very small percentage of that group) and trust me when I say this: they can't help you.

I urge you to use the forum's ignore function so that you don't have to be subjected to, nor be forced to co-opt or be co-opted by this really quite grievous hostility that the internet as yet hasn't figured out how to tackle.

You left-click on the person's avatar or forum name and click on "ignore" in the pop up box.

Wow, did not expect this thread to blow up the way it did...

Anyway, for the record, if map layouts could be claimed as intellectual property the League of Legends wouldn't exist.

I know what the law is on the matter. I also know a very good business lawyer that would set up counter suites to any C&D orders. Which is completely irrelevant because as I said I work like to see this. I never said I wanted to make it. So this is really hypothetical. A thought experiment. And the question was 'would this be looked down on?'.
