If I wanted to, for the sake of an example, have a windmill object with a fan object attached that would rotate when turned on, would this be best to animate externally and import with the animations attached, or animate internally?

It would be one line of code to animate it in Unity, plus you'd have easier control over it.

I think actually for a graphic artist, animating it in your choice of modelling tool is the best choice.

If all the blades are doing is spinning, it'd probably be easier to animate with code, especially if you ever wanted them to change speed and/or reverse.
