[WIP] The Dawn - A 2D Android game

    Hello there,

    I want to share the game I have just started working on with all of you. It will most probably be called "The Dawn" (you'll see why). I have derived the game's logical idea from "Jetpack Joyride" by amazing Halfbrick Studios and the ambience and environment from "Limbo" by PlayDead Studios.

    I would first of all like to say that I am a beginner at game development and C# itself (but have programming experience). I am a designer by profession and I guess that is going to help me a lot through my game development. I have a desire to make my own Android game and share it with friends and family.

    It's been just a few days since I have started working on it. Therefore, the game is in its very infancy.

    Here's a teaser screenshot :



    Guys, I need your ideas/suggestions/opinions/feedback, etc. Everything will be welcomed :D Don't forget to take a look at the poll I've just created. (If I have actually been able to create it xD)

    I will keep posting relevant progression information along with updates and stuff while trying not to spam.

    Nice screenshot, however gameplay vids/web demos are the best thing to have for people to comment on your game.

    Looking good keep it up :)

    Certainly. But as mentioned, the game is in its very baby stage. Not much I can actually show with a video right now. I will definitely be posting a gameplay video and a free Android demo APK for those who want to try it, but that would be after I pass a certain level of completion.

    Anyway, thanks a lot for the appreciation. Really boosted my morale :). I will keep updating the main post with updates and screenshots.

    Hi

    Sorry but I don't see where it is "derived", for what I can see on the screenshot, it's just 100% copied on Limbo.
    The character, the environment, the light and even the obstacles are exactly the same.
    Let's hope the gameplay is at least different.

    The objects you see on the screenshot have been got rid of. I added them just to get a good screenshot. The character has to be redesigned as it was designed in a rush.
    And I can never match the level of detail Limbo has in itself, including entities, lighting etc. The lightning you see in the image is just an image on the background XD.
    The gameplay is definitely gonna be a lot different than Limbo. Will keep you updated :)

    Beep beep, update here.

    Well, it had to be a big one, but I decided to start over with the game. In my previous attempt, I bad successfully, generated obstacles, ground obstacles, collectables and powerups and developed a nice interaction with each of them. But I decided to start over as my method and code was messy.

    So, after starting over, the screenshots below show what I have got so far. Apart from those, I have also added some sound effects and animations which I cannot demonstrate atm (sorry)

    As you can see, the character now releases some nice glitters while in flight mode. I will soon post a video of the game working with some other updates. Please leave feedback, any of it will be appreciated. Thank you.

    As the developer of LENS, I'd suggest you to add some more colors, or at least tweak the visuals to make it look less LIMBO-ish, or else you'll meet a lot of those comments.

    Edit: Looks smooth and has a great toon-ish art otherwise! :)

    Will definitely look forward to your suggestion. However, I have already been considering coloured obstacles in form of lasers and various powerups which may end colorizing the game a bit. Will that be enough or should I actually keep the B/w game idea aside?

    Your game idea sounds interesting, just make sure to kind of not forget it when you are updating the game's visuals etc to make it fit!

    Hello there,

    I've been pretty busy but I am finally up with another update to the game.

    Update list :

    1) Object generation
    2) GUI
    3) Power-ups
    4) Store
    6) Total number of coins get saved.
    7) Maximum distance travelled gets saved.
    8) Store transactions get saved.
    => NOTE: The power-ups bought from store are meant to be used however many times in a single run. Once the power is used and the level has been reset/restarted, the player will have to purchase a new one.
    9) Restart screen
    10) Random hints selected and displayed from an array on restart screen
    11) I am forgetting listing some things here

    What I plan to do in next update :

    1) Rework the GUI to fit the game's theme
    2) Optimize sprites as each sprite weights around 1000-3000 pixels.
    3) More power-ups
    4) Store update
    5) A secret addition I have in mind (hint : colours and lollipops)
    6) Adding more sounds.
    7) Fix those buggy animations
    8) Add GUI animations
    9) Load screens to switch between scenes
    10) Listen to your suggestions and work on them.

    I am sorry but the video was recorded in a rush, therefore it looks so messy (but you get the idea where the game is going). Also, I couldn't manage to record the sound this time.

    Looks pretty cool, I like the addition of colors. :)

    A few things I noticed (not really bad just noticeable)
    The end screen looks kinda like it says "the down".
    At points the player blends into the backround.
    The lasers flash really fast, maybe have it set to longer for some of them, or just constant for some, playing around with that and the size could make a lot of different (more/less) challenging lasers.

    Hey thanks for the reply.

    Taking your suggestions, I will keep the green lasers constant and red ones flashing. There are also 3 sizes of each laser, but definitely I will make more if you feel that needs to be done.
    The player is intended to blend at certain points in the game. Will be fixed if it doesn't look good :)
    And.. The Down thingy, yes its the fault in my logo l. A lot of people read it that way. Will be fixed.

    Knock knock!
    Who's there?
    A new update
    OoooOOOOoooo

    Video (better this time) :


    Updates :

    1) Wonderland (still in development)
    2) New and dynamic menu.
    3) Updated store theme (a little bit)
    4) Added Start system.
    - User gets 3 stars after running/flying certain distance. Now, if the player has those 3 stars on death, then on restart screen, he will be seeing a beating heart which he can use to regain life. (Animations need to be done on this part).
    5) Added speed-up powerup.
    6) Animations and some graphics during wonderland transition. Similar is the case when you collect powerups.
    7) Total coins collected in present run are saved and are restored when you come back from wonderland. Same with distance travelled.
    9) GUI has been redone. Although animations are still pending.
    10) New backgrounds
    8) I am again forgetting listing some stuff here. You may want to watch the video, it's better this time.

    NOTE : For people saying that wonderland appears way too quick, I know. It's for the showcase thing. I couldn't bother to wait for it to appear.

    What I plan to do in next update :

    1) Work a bit more on wonderland.
    2) Reworking some more designs.
    3) Animations.
    4) Objective system with rewards.
    5) Sounds and sound effects.
    6) Bug fixing

    For the next update, I promise to publish a demo APK for you guys to try it out.

    Looks great, the only thing I have is that the wonderland is too long, it seemed to take 1/2 of the video and yet we saw more of them appearing in the game. Maybe 10 seconds would be a good amount of time or it spawns less often. The sounds also just seemed like backround sounds (no jump, laser, collect coins, that giant portal, nothing made noise).

    Keep up the good work, it looks great. :)

    Hello, thanks for replying.
    About the wonderland part, I have e mentioned in description that I have made it spawn often deliberately for showcase purpose as I didn't want to wait for too long for it to show up. In the final product it will be spawning way slower than shown in the video.
    Also, yes, I do need to add sounds. The sound in the video is just as overlay done in video editing tools. :)

    Hello, new update!

    Following objectives have been added :









    I will always welcome your suggestions.

    I have also added some new animations and fixed some previous ones which I will be showing in next video.

    Also, I need some opinion on my new idea :

    A merchandise system. Basically, player can customize character by buying clothes, hats, or whatever from the store for the orbs he gets. Now for that I'd be reworking the GUI of store to fit the theme and also create a character customize portal. It would be a bit tricky and complex to implement but fun, a lot fun.

    That's it.
