I agree with Fishman, the skies that are clear during the four times he mentioned are exactly what I need.

We get signal! Somebody set up us the bomb!

    $sidescroller-31.png

I'm also out of my slump with Garlan, too. I've decided he'll be a significantly more powerful Steelguard, with better stats. The way you defeat him more easily is to drop these bombs on him by using the Earthbane Gauntlets' ability to break breakable blocks. However, even if you get him with all three bombs, it still won't be enough to defeat him; you have to face off with him mano a mano.

Addendum: Don't get hit with said bombs, either, though - it won't be pretty.

Honestly, there's to much contrast going on.. it kinda making my eyes bleed.

I'd try to make the colours like the crashday games..

I'll reserve my final judgement for when his scene is more fleshed out but, while I personally agree with your opinion, it should be taken into account that colours and contrast are also often tailored to specific audiences. American, European, and Asian markets as well as target audience age brackets respond differently to certain colour palettes.

I was just making this in my spare time. It's more of a portfolio piece, so I thought it should go here.

CodeSmith, I like your art. One bad thing is the tiling of the wall and the floor: there's no variety. Anyway I like the atmosphere, so yellowish ;) Keep working!

Here's my new piece of work. I changed my mind. First I was making a cartoony orc, but I was unable to draw the textures. I don't have a graphic tablet and I'm not very good at painting as i was supposed to, for cartoony look. So I moved to a more realistic one, although the proportions of the character are still a bit wired (tris are 1960).

I seem to love everything you post! :D I like minimal pixel art, but your use of colour and tone is great at setting an atmosphere. Really slick stuff - keep up the good work! :D

Freefall, how do you feel about your cubemaps? The first time I noticed them was in the 360° scene you posted, and to me it looked "too realistic" if you will for the smooth cartoonlike shading you have going on in your textures. Now I can't unsee it in all your pictures :D

    Other than that, *drool*

I honestly have no idea what else to do with the cubemap man.. if I'd make it some random blobs it wouldn't fit either..

Yeah I had nothing helpful to suggest either. The only thing I could think of would be a cubemap with just white-transparent gradients to make it look like studio lit photography:

But I'm not really sure that would fit, like you say. Whatevs, judging by your previous work you'll find a way to make it amazing!
I will now stop posting off topic here ;D

Well, I'm keeping the cubemap, I just reduced the strength a bit!

    Pretty much final!

It looks a like crayon, that is okay, but your metal does not look similar. The metal must match the style.

Your crate texture also need work. The nails do not match the style and the texture does not repeat well because the planks do not align. So it does not look natural. You can find lots of reference for it on Google.

Also work on your highlighting and good idea to change viewport lighting, default lighting is usually bad for handpainted.

It is not bad for your first try, please do not be discouraged! You will improve! :)

The artwork is slowly but surely coming along. A musician has also joined me in helping to establish the mood for the game as well. You can listen to some of his work here: http://vegetarianmeat.bandcamp.com/track/daily-grind

The image might be a little bit large, and isn't clickable for some odd reason, downloading it and viewing it or inserting it into your image extension for your browser of choice will enable you to see it more clearly and without hindrance.

Thanks for the tips, I was going for a grungy feel, maybe thats why they look like crayon, I was trying for a hand painted feel that was less cartoony, but I guess I should stick with the basics to start off.

Here is a texture I made, there is a grunge texture in overlay, but maybe I shouldn't put that and go more simple.

And also, I am doing these at work on my breaks with a mouse because I don't have a lot of time on my hands lately, I have a wacom tablet at home, I'll try it with that and see if I can do a better job.

You're welcome. That is probably why. A lot of people don't like grunge on hand-painted but I think it will depend on what the finished scene look like. So maybe yours will look good, don't be discouraged!

As I said, lots of people don't like grunge on hand painted, but I think your texture has potential. I did a quick paint over without affecting your grunge to show you how you can improve some things, but my paint over is not perfect! Most noticeable, my highlights and some colour problems. I also did not fix big cracks on the two bricks, they stick out a lot and should be more subtle.

If you have question please ask. Also if you are interested you can also look at this and this. Look at how they do some of their texture, maybe it will inspire you. :)
