Edit: new version now available - see below for details.

    Hi,

I'm a self-taught game developer, based in the UK. I've been using Unity on and off for over 4 years, and C# for the same purpose over the last 3 years.

I'd like to present the Sonic Adventure Prototype - a tech demo created in an attempt to replicate the character controller used in the games Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2.

The project began in mid-September, and since then, the total time spent on this project as of this post is estimated at around 6 to 7 weeks.

This week the first playable tech demo was released. There's still some more work to be done before a proper tutorial stage is ready, but it should be done before the end of the month.

Some of the code will be available on GitHub once the code base is refactored. A link to my GitHub page is available on my website, but a direct link from here will be available once the new code goes up.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy the demo. Look out for updates and new releases in the coming weeks.

The second build of the prototype is now live!

The page links remain the same but the content has been updated: see above for details.

The old test level is gone, and this time around you’re headed into outer space for a brand-new tutorial stage. It takes place on a site that might be familiar to those who have played Sonic Adventure 2, albeit missing the conveniently-placed meteors and the space station in the distance, but nevertheless with a stunning view of the Earth on one side, and a vast, unending void on the other.

The stage is linear this time, with a proper goal and a series of hints to guide you through the level.

Everything you could do in the old level is available to do here, including the use of the electric shield, which is now in a much less obvious place – see if you can find it. There’s also now the added danger of the character’s death, a functional life counter, springs, and the camera control has been moved over to the triggers.

If anyone’s interested in speedrunning the level, the record stands at 1:05.35. If you manage a better time, screenshot it if you can and leave it as a reply to this thread.

For now, thanks for taking a look, and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
