Content that uses Unity 1.x Pro features always crashes my XP boxes, and my Vista-using friends couldn't open any Unity 1.6 content if it was delivered as just a .html and a .unityweb.

Unity 1.x games use OpenGL for drawing things on the screen. Even if we have lots of broken driver workarounds, some OpenGL drivers are just totally broken. This was one of the reasons why we did a Direct3D renderer in Unity 2.0, we're seeing much fewer problems (and better performance).

Other than that, Unity 1.x games run on Vista just as fine as on XP.

Windows XP supports GeForce 8600 just fine as well. Can be hard to find a new machine with XP preinstalled though.
