Will random shape fit in a space

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. I want to create a system that will tell me weather a shape of no specified length, volume or number of sides (let call this shape A) will fit inside of another shape (Shape B), with the possibility of other shapes already existing inside of shape B. Any help or buzz words that can help me search would be greatly appreciated.

 

Sounds related to the bin packing problem, though simpler. I don't know any particulars.

but obviously this is just rectangles and I'm after irregular shapes
