Why is there still extreme banding in low light conditions?

    I just was wondering if UT is aware of this bug in Enlighten? Screen Shot 2016-09-11 at 7.13.05 AM.png

    Was really hoping this would be fixed in 5.4...

    It's the RGBM encoding of the lightmaps.

    I mean, I understand that RGBM encoding causes typical banding and that some banding will be inevitable for lightmaps in general, but it seems to me these bright white strips that are more than just 1 / 255 from the adjacent color are caused by something else. Or am I mistaken?

    I'm not 100% sure myself, but this issue has been around since 5.0 betas and has been bug reported multiple times. A developer said that its related to the RGBM encoding (I believe it was @KEngelstoft ) and that they are going to look into other types of encoding.

    Not sure if anything changed in 5.5 though (although I have seen that work is put in for somewhat related stuff -HDR textures etc)

    Ok, great, well I'll hope for the best then. Enlighten has definitely been steadily improving.
