Why do materials and textures not import?

    I am using Unity 2017 but when I import an FBX file with embedded media the materials do not have the textures, they don't even get imported into the project, I have to switch to the 'Use External Materials (Legacy)' option for the materials and textures to be correct. What am I doing wrong, why is this fundamental feature not working? If I use the 'Embedded Materials' option as Unity seems to want me to do I can't use any object, I can import the texture manually but I can't add it to the object unless I Extract the materials and textures which then allows me to assign the texture. What am I missing with this new workflow? Why does Unity not just work and import my materials and textures for me?

    Are you using the stingray pbs or DirectX material in 3D package? Also might ask which package are you using?

    Check to see if you are doing the steps properly here.

    I also noticed this issue after updating to 2017.3.1p1 today. I'm using Maya 2018.2 and my material is a simple Lambert, NO stingray PBS or DirectX stuff.

    Did you watch the short videos linked above? The direction to transfer materials/shaders across is to USE those shaders in DCC - rather than not using them.

    Not until this morning.. So does the importer only import embedded stingray PBS now? It seems like if the embedded materials option is set by default it should just do that instead of having to extract them or remapping

    Sorry your experiencing this from Maya, might consider a bug report. I've tested out of Max and it works flawlessly. I'd suspect it to work in Maya without issues as well, though I can't test.

    I'm in the same boat, except I'm using Maya LT 2018.2 and Unity 2017.3.1p4.

    If I choose "Use External Materials (Legacy)" then the material and textures are extracted from the .fbx file, so they are being exported correctly, however I have tried umteen different ways of using Embedded Materials without success.

    Here is the sample .fbx file (6MB).

    I dont even seem to have the option to select the Use External Materials (Legacy)?

    its fixed in 2008.2.14.. download the new version

    So then it's not just broken, but broken again in 2018.2.15f1???

    Remapping materials still worked fine a few days ago while still using 2018.2.1f1.

    I can confirm - remapping materials was broken in 2018.2.13, was fixed in 2018.2.14 and is broken again in 2018.2.15.
    It's weird and quite annoying.

    I can confim too... In unity 2018.2.14 works good, but in 2018.2.15 it's broken.

    I have THE SAME thing, I can't see the options in the material panel. also I have the same error from console. I'm using Unity 2018.2.15f1. It is VERY annoying.

    2018.2.16f1 is here and the Material Import Settings are back!
