It also shows a bunch of guys. In fact, it seems like a pretty typical small game dev studio to me.

Ladies can make games too, y'know?

According to my only vaguely related YouTube analytics page, 5.9 % of Unity developers who are female. This could also indicate that female developers are cleverer then there male counterparts, and don't need tutorials. Or any number of strange factors that might bias my channel towards males.

We also have a couple of female developers who frequent this site, including @Ony and @Teila. And of course both of our community managers (@Aurore and @SaraCecilia) are female.

Point is that while female developers are far from the norm, the certainly not rare.

5.9% seems pretty rare. :( I think the next generation will do better.

While the overall fields statistics are slightly better (20%) it is still pretty abysmal. I really hope the next generation does do better too and I will certainly do my part to make sure that it does. Current statistics in this topic are quite depressing.

Sample size could totally bias my results. I could do the statistical analysis to determine the confidence margin and figure out how close I might be to the real result. But I'm not going to bother. I do enough hard stats in my day job, no point bringing it home with me.

5% is one in twenty. It's about on par with other technical fields. This comment is base on even shakier stats, most of the technical people I email at work are male. There are some female chemical engineers as well.

I should probably google some better stats from the inter web.

I sometimes wonder weather better in this regard is a good thing. Sure, I'm not for going back to the days were women were not allowed to work, much less participate in highly technical fields.

But attempting to strike a 'balance' of a fifty-fifty gender split in any profession strikes me as wrong. The desire to participate in most professions is not balanced, so why should we aim to balance participation?

I'm not at all saying that I want to force "50/50 balance". If someone were to come up with an affirmative action type of proposal I would be against it I don't think that type of shaping the demographics of the workforce helps in the long run and creates other problems.

However, if our field was free of social constructs/prejudices I can guarantee the balance would not be 80% / 20%. There are numerous documentaries that outline how women have not gotten the same level of encouragement as their male counterparts and also numerous examples of even larger prejudices both in the workforce and our education systems.

Whatever the real uninfluenced balance percentage is I don't know but hopefully we can get to that rate someday. In general the focus should be more eradicating the bad behavior from our workplaces and making the education systems encouraging equally to both sexes.

Yeah, the gender split doesn't matter. Freedom and comfort do, and at the moment those things aren't even close to being equal in our field (or many others).

Of my 127,000 YT views, mostly Unity related, 9.5% are from women, almost all in the 18 -34 age groups.

Fair enough comments on the equality issue.

Anyway, back to the question at hand. A google image search for this image:

    Unity girl.png

    Gave me this result:

    Google result.png

Which proves pretty conclusively that google image search has not yet developed into a viable, useful technology for internet stalkers.

She is a mysterious being known to some nerdy game developers as a "female". Some say that in the real world these "females" may even live together with a man for a longer period of time. And some say together they can even have children. I think these are only legends, though.

What we are seeing in this video in fact is just a very high quality graphics demo for Unity 5.
Everything else would just be silly.

Good use for a topic, though. Mad props! :p

Now I miss the facepalm smiley again cause of this thread :)

However if someone is desperate enough to figure out who she is I can give a tip for a start. The company (Nival) was recently showcased or part of Unity developer profile interviews

This is getting sad. However I have watched the presentation several times over to glean some more hints.

It probably is a model. In my experience these photo shoots take more time then the average developer is willing to put in. Plus they require time and attention to be paid to makeup, dress and appearance, shaving and the like. And if you need a bunch of male models to cover off on this, you might as well hire a female model from the agency as well.

Other indications that indicate it might be are models are the fact that there are no shots of anyone actually working in Unity. The screen shots could just as easily have been done with recordings. Camera placement very carefully avoids showing any hands on the keyboard.

Plus both the unity moustache guy and the clockwork elf were definitely models.

Darn it, you are right. There goes my model theory. Here is the same shot (at about 1:10, and again at 4:35)

If you want more women developers you should prob quit creeping on them. Even in jest.

Okay, I'll stop. Perhaps one of our female members could stalk the guys in the montage just to balance things out?

Interestingly Nival seems to have quite a few female developers. Maybe the Russians have things better organised for encouraging women to pursue game development then their western counterparts. Something we could learn there? Or maybe not. As seems to be my thing tonight I've jumped to another pretty dramatic conclusion based on anecdotal evidence. I have not browsed through the employee profiles of any other large game development companies for comparison.

One of my female colleagues (teaching a tertiary computer science program) is a Russian former physicist and another is a former Bosnian electronic engineer. I think there's more gender equality in Eastern Europe generally.
