Hello guys. It seems obvious - some sounds are needed more, some less often and some probably never find any real use in game.

So I decided to ask. Which sounds do you guys need the most ? Which sounds would you likely buy in a sound bank ?

Looking forward to your feedback !

    What genre?
First person games will always need footsteps or weapon sounds I suppose.
Puzzle games need super friendly (musical) electronic sounds or orchestral stabs and crescendos.
    The list goes on forever.

And, as you probably know, it's an impossible thing to answer really. Don't forget people will change the pitch and reverse the sound and play it completely out of context for which it was originally intended.

How about having a look at what's popular in the store, and make one better.
    OR, think what's missing?! :)
And make loads of the samples, and don't forget to group and index them properly. :)

No specific category, depends on what kind of game I'm doing. However, I can still give you an idea of what I value. First, I'm more likely to buy any sort of sounds I either can't easily record with my Zoom H2n, synthesize, or achieve by layering a bunch of other sounds. Hard to say which those are really, because usually that works. My main problem with most sound libraries is the tendency to make every sound too loud and aggressive. Take sci-fi energy weapons for example. Many sound library creators has a tendency to want everything go "BLAAAM!!!", "ZAAAAAP!!!", making it much harder to find a "fzzZz". There's no way to end up with a good mix if every sound is screaming for attention.

Also, stereo width (even if just a subtle one) is essential for every sound, period. Finally, the basics should be done right (no DC offset, no clipping, no unnecessary effects or filters, start and end at zero amplitude unless looped, consistent and understandable naming, and use of a nice folder structure instead of unnecessary long filenames).

It's weirdly hard to find game sound libraries that gets most of these things right, and I'd be most interested in any good libraries that does!

    Short sounds, not soundscapes.
A short rain loop and a cricket sound and a thunder sound is better than a one sound with all three in it.
Cute animal sounds I guess. Moo, Baa, Woof, Chirp, Squawk, Quack, Neigh, Chitter, Hiss. I'm not sure if you know what I mean when I say that I've heard a lot of bad, loud, long animal sounds which are completely useless in a game.

    Nice.
I would say, good quality sounding sword swishes, sword clangs, shield clangs, axe swings, the clang sounds when a sword or axe etc. hits a metal shield or wooden shield etc.
For both realistic and cartoony, sword combat type games.

Or to put it in a nutshell, sounds that you would hear, when 2 ancient weapon wielding warriors, attack each other.
