Please vote. If you dislike more than 1 genre, even better.

    Cheers!

Idle games. I hate them with a passion. What's even worse is if I start playing one I won't be able to put it down for hours. Despite the fact that I am not actually enjoying the game play.

You should add telltale games to the list. The genre is malfunctioning dvd player.

I used to hate racing games because they were so simple. But when you compare them to telltale... at least they use the lack of substance to pump up the graphics.

What about "I have no skills so I'm doing pixel art" games?

Good pixel art is difficult, and takes a lot of skill. Not to mention programming the game takes skill.

I know, it's just that people often use "pixel art" as an excuse for bad art skills.
Take a look at Greenlight and you'll see quite a bit of it.

I don't see how pixel art is any different to any other kind of art in that regard.

Fantasy RPG's (including MMORPG's), VN's and walking sims (are those even games?)

But not every game is about art, as long as it fits theres not a problem with that

MAN...the zombies are not getting any love on that vote. I remember a time when gamer's every where were screaming at the top of their lungs for a "good" zombie game. Now their screaming to stop the madness.

    Really?

I have seen this game and watched it. I am thoroughly unimpressed by it.

My problem is not with the level of graphics quality either, since most people always think that. My problems is with the general game play, A.I. and mechanics.

@Tomnnn Thanks for reminding me. I thought it looked pretty good. A little deeper than most with the searching and crafting. Unfortunately they had only released it on Steam the last time I checked so never got it. I will check Desura and GOG tonight and see if they have it.

As of alpha 9 or 10 (maybe 8, don't remember) the game can be played offline, so steam isn't an issue :p It's definitely harder now than it used to be, but you can fix that by editing the xml files to create new recipes to bring it back to the glory days. The only big problem right now is that you're gated by recipe books. You can't even make a forge without a book! I tend to just give a new character all of the books.

They have sloped, smooth voxels now for terrain. Mechanically it's minecraft with structural integrity. The next set of updates is adding debris similar to the new corpse debris :D

7days had a dark period when the game was laggy, it was impossible to progress because of the rarity of the forge book, and you tended to spawn near a pack of dogs. But things are looking better now. Your character can level up and that affects the quality of items you can make.

The ai is terrifying. It doesn't matter where you hide, because they'll find you. And with the new corpse debris mechanic, you can't just put down spikes anymore. They'll climb towers of corpse debris piles and get in. I don't know if it's more or less frightening than when they used to dig downward to the weakest part of your house then burrow in lol.

Eehh.. I like it because it's like super-minecraft. All the voxel and crafting things I like from minecraft, all the zombie things that are missing from... everything else. The last major gripe I had with the game was how easy it was to break a leg, but splints are pretty cheap to make. If you hunt police zombies in those burnt zones, you can get weapons pretty quickly in alpha 11.

And eating laxatives makes your opinions defecate more?
And proctologists want to explore your opinions?
And you need to wipe after expressing your opinions?

    Ok that's all I got.

When I started playing video games in the mid 80's, there was a more balanced representation among genres. I can't think of any type of game that I genuinely dislike. It seems rather that the today's market is saturated with certain genres.

I love TellTale games. I guess it's a matter of different tastes. Certain parts felt like a brute force point-and-click but most of it was amazing. The Walking Dead was the last game that made me cry. I mean, you gotta feel for Lee because he's just trying to do good but you also feel sad for yourself because Lee represents you in the game.

What genre would you put Tower Defence in? Casual maybe?

It would be unfair to tar Casual as a game genre I dislike, but Tower Defence games are maybe a sub-group within it that I dislike some of.

A lot of Tower Defences do not give a user many options to interact, get to build in an allocated spot when enough cash is collected. If you're lucky the game might have a power up fireball spell with a cooldown period.

Why do genres even matter? For sales they're useful, for design they just cloud things.

Yet sales and design are closer linked than you suggest.
With a sales pitch, the genre sets a level of expectation, certain features of that genre are expected based on games following similar patterns. Competetive RTS without a minimap? Doomed to fail.
But I agree to the wider point I assume you're alluding to in that you should make a game, not paint by numbers.

what would be interesting is to know why some people like some types of games and what kind of things they dislike in a game.

That's why I stated the genre is 'malfunctioning dvd player' because that's about the level of gameplay and interactivity you get. It's like putting your favorite movie into into a dvd player and then every 2-5 seconds it stops and you have to hit a button to make it resume.

It's not a bad thing, I enjoy watching them as movies on longplay websites... but I could never stand to sit there and fiddle with the game as if I were roleplaying a sony employee servicing a defective dvd player.

The rts freemium pay to win would be my most hated.

Though clones, especially bad clones of bad games (like flappy bird) are particularly terrible.

LOL, I had to look it up.
My thought on it looks like your profile picture. Though, I can see some humor to it watching all the others die.
Still, flappy bird was a terrible game. It was popular for how bad it was. Like how people watch bad movies to make fun of them.

I love tower defense games though, but few are done really well nowadays. They tend to be tuned to strongly encourage you to buy more whatevers so you can upgrade faster. Anyone have a good one for ios?

My favorite type of game is FPS action. My favorite games of all time are Descent and Counter Strike. There are a few games in every genre that I don't care for, but I would have to say I have games I also really like in each genre. I can't really pick a genre that I actually dislike.

I am not sure the polling options are a proper genre list, anyway. I typically think of genres as things like Action, Adventure, Simulator, Casual, etc. Then things like racing, sports, or zombies are the topics. So something like Sports Simulator would be the sports topic applied to the Simulator genre. Some sports games could actually be classified as Sports Action if there was a focus on action instead of simulation. The same thing can happen with racing. Some racing games are Racing Action while others are Racing Simulation.
