If you want to create a game by yourself?

I have heard Unreal Engine 4 is far better because of blueprints.

And also it comes with the black theme I understand Unity 5 free edition comes with the ugly white theme.
I am highly against the white theme

How could we know what suits you best?
You haven't told us what your skills are. I personally would not like to use some drag and drop 'programming' like UE4 blueprint, but to each his own i guess.
Go ahead and try both engines and take what you like best.

Sometimes I just wish they were free so that I could test them out and decide.

    Download both.
    Install both.
    Try using both.

I've used both. Personally, I strongly prefer using Unity. Since you are asking this question in the Unity forum, expect to see similar replies.

They are both good and it depends what skills do you have and what workflows do you like. Like been said try them both since it will not cost you anything but time. Make a simple game with both.

Just play with both of them. When you were a kid how did you figure which one was your favorite toy? You played with them until you naturally gravitated towards one of them. It's okay to play! :D

Heh, so he has already asked the same here before (now I remember the name from other threads which some of the got locked) and with short a google search it seems the same question at Unreal forums and probably other places. During all that time based on the dates there should have been something done with either one by now...

He even had a thread, from back in October, where he mentioned getting a student discount for Unreal 4. So it isn't like he hasn't had the opportunity to give either a quick evaluation. He simply hasn't done it.

Unity, Unreal and all the other engines have benefits and drawbacks. Do you think the development community, full of really intelligent people would spread so widely if there was a single engine that was far superior to the rest? ;)

Yes, UE4 got blueprints, there is also visual editors and other tools for Unity that do basically the same thing. Will any of them allow you to create every game that you imagine? No, they are limited to their nodes and functionality... advanced stuff still require that you stick your head into the dark hole full of strange code.

Visual theme? Who care about that? Do you purchase tools based on their appearance or their functionality?

People might be able to help you more if you described your current knowledge about game development and the project that you want to make.

Unreal also has a framework/prototype approach where you can start off with an existing input system and control mechanic e.g. FPS, Twin Stick, Driving ect.

This means that if you're game fits into one of the prototypes then you already have what would probably cost you in time and money on the assets store.

On the other hand Unity is widening its range of learning materials and it's standard prototype asset package does include a range of vehicles, cameras and controller setups.

Unreals networking code is built in so multi-player is already there.

Unity's existing one is OK for smaller projects and they are working on a new one that should be easier to use. But the Photon networking system is good and includes cloud servers.

Unity C# or Unity/Javascript easy to use programming.

Unreals Blueprints amazing and fun way to build logic. But tends to be slower to code with and is interpreted so is slower to run. C++ native speed but with great power comes great responsibility!

Both are free so take them out for a test drive!

It is a nice change of pace from dealing with people complaining that Unity Personal does not include the dark skin. :p

Much appreciated from the feedback I have gotten it seems Unreal Engine 4 is the best bet. But I will still download Unity 5 and try it out.

BTW what do you guys think about Unity 4 PRO vs Unity 5 Free? Does Unity 5 Free have better graphics etc than Unity 4 Pro and Unity 4 free?

Check out the section regarding the République game (starting at roughly 18:48). It has some segments concerning differences between 4 and 5. Consider as you watch that Unity 5 Free has all the graphical features of Unity 5 Pro.

There is also a more in-depth series of videos, podcasts, and dev diaries.

^ thanks I have not yet started my game design because I have had a lot of work in my Electrical and Engineering maths classes which is why I have yet to start my game. But with school closing rather soon I am going to have a lot of time to play around. I will check out this video, my gripes in the past was looking at Unity Free games with Unity 4 Free they looked really bad the lighting was like 2001 PS2 graphics compared to the Unity 4 Pro which was so much better.

And didn't want to spend time learning a program when I had gotten UE4 subscription from github but with everything free now and Unity 5 having better graphics I think I have more options now.

BTW does a figure of $500 US a month revenue, sound reasonable for a solo dev doing everything? looking at android games and PC indie game, willing to put a lot of effort into it and about 2 to 3 years on such a game. But would hate to know that less than $500 US a month would be the outcome. I could settle for $400 US a month possibly.

I am starting from scratch learning everything.

Unity 5 (both Pro and Personal) have better graphics than Unity 4 Pro and massively better graphics than Unity 4 Free. Unity 5 comes with Enlighten, which is one of the most amazing lighting packages available.

If you are targeting 400-500 a month Unity is certainly the cheaper engine.

There was a thread back in October where some developers, such as @Gigiwoo, gave some statistics on their income with the first of them starting at post twelve.

Note that this is incorrect. Both engines would be completely free for you if you make $500 a month. Unity would be free up to $8300~ in revenue per month ($100,000 annual gross) while Unreal would be free as long as you keep below $3000 dollars per quarter, per product.

My bad. I thought the UE limit was per year. This makes half of my comments on the pricing of this engine inaccurate. Live and learn.

This is a comparison thread so I'm locking it. We've been down these roads. Listen, both are free, so you should download both and spend a couple of days in each. Measure how far you get.

    That's what smart people do.
