Why the long delay - although google search of Unity 4.5 beta 1 brings up a nice changelog
Also 4.6 being tested at same time?
So will we have two major releases before Unity 5?

Whats the deal guys, some confusion?

nah you won't get it unless you are working with a console.

Incorrect. 4.4 is for console licensees. 4.5 is coming "soon", with 4.6 and the new gui coming later in the summer, I believe. So yes, there are two more major releases before 5.0.

Delay? You mean why is 4.5 still in beta? Because it takes time to get a complex application production ready.

Ok fair answer :) Maybe I keep getting confused between point builds.
I assume when you adding new features to 4.5 and therefore need to recheck everything again.

Could we get conservative estimate when it will be released. Please?

4.5 contains lots of fixes and enchantments for 2d stuff that have been long overdue, i mean stuff like this:
    http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/211426-OnTriggerExit2D-not-working-when-changing-local-scale
    http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/211486-Physics2D-Bounds-and-Extents
    http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/233369-Rigidbody2D-AddForce-ForceMode

    etc

Most of this stuff has been implemented 3-4 months ago, yet it still hasn't been released, its kinda mind boggling. I can understand waiting long for new features, but small fixes like this should be delivered at much more rapid peace.

No offense meant of course i still believe you guys do a great job, and I'm a free user so i have little right to complain. But if I had to pick one thing that irritates me most about Unity that would no doubt be very long release cycle for small improvements/fixes

From that change log it looks like the event system made it in 4.5

I have been looking forward to it for a long time. No more awkard sendmessages or delegate and event handling code for me.

Weeks does not mean "it's exactly one week". If he said that it won't be month, 7 weeks are still possible ;)

4.5 with all it's fixes will be great, but I'm desperately still waiting for 4.6 with the new GUI.

While developing my first mobile game I've been finding that creating a nice looking and functional GUI/HUD that works across multiple display sizes/aspect ratios is a hair-pulling and head-ache inducing exercise.
I'm assuming most people sucked it up and purchased something like NGUI or Diakon(sp?) because after spending the better part of two weeks trying every approach I could find or think of I'm damn near at the point of giving up until 4.6 is released.
    /end shameless whining

I am waiting more for 4.5 than 4.6. The beta release notes sounded very nice. I really got accustomed though to NGUI and it has made such tremendous progress and became much easier to use lately. New UIs are a matter of minutes now. All my sizing issues are gone with things like anchors. But sure, I am also curious what they made out of it, as it allegedly was the foundation for the new GUI.

I don't usually like to complain, but having been on the wrong side of a blocking bug myself (one that prevented my game from being usable) which had been fixed but required waiting for months for release, the cycle for releases can be quite frustrating. But being on the wrong side of a feature regression due to a weakly tested update would probably be even more annoying, so it's hard to say what the best outcome is..

Maybe Unity could add an option for updating to specific release tiers. For example, look at how companies like cPanel do it. They have release tiers including Stable, Release, Current, Edge. The the sysadmin can set the release tier for each server depending on their specific needs. Here is a link describing each of their release tiers:
    http://docs.cpanel.net/twiki/bin/vi...stallationGuide/CpanelProductVersions#Release tiers

I'm pretty sure being around unity since 2009 wouldn't make me a kid... its just I'm exited for the new futures.. and for your info...if its coming out next week,,, you should say it will come out in 2 weeks. like the first time... the uGUI was supposed to come out this Sprint.. then they changed it to Summer.. I'm pretty sure that fast change made everything better.. instead of just saying it will come out this spring and then a delay to summer.. it just pisses the users off.

Thats why they don't say a specific release date anymore.
Graham said days or weeks, not month. That could still be two weeks from now without *any* interruption and somehow the users still complain.

It does not make sense to me to have 4.5 and 4.6 in beta for months and get the public ready for Version 5.
I'm mostly waiting for mobile bug fixes and not new features at all.
Which brings me to the questions is Version 5 built on top of 4.6 or is fresh from the ground?

Since 5.0 will have (somewhat) deep changes (see in another thread from today) and 4.6 is planned specifically for uGUI, it seems unlikely that 5.0 is built atop of 4.6.
Somebody of the Unity team even mentioned the impropable, but technically possible chance of 5 coming before 4.6. I wouldn't put money on that, though ;)

There's DevGamm - a game dev conference in Moscow this week (May 15-16). There will be quiet a few Unity sessions. Maybe they'll announce the 4.5 release date at that event?

You should never depend on software (any software) ever arriving on a particular date. Work with what actually exists.

If you know that it's [relatively] close, though, then why waste a bunch of money/resources/etc. on something that would be fixed soon anyway? I mean, you're practically guaranteed to waste resources in some form.

Still, it's understandable that you would be taking a gamble in that situation and it may not work out very well. I guess it would depend on where you're at with your project.

I think it's quite OK if you were informed that there will be new features in days/ or a week.

It never actually works out that way. As demonstrated by this thread. They can give their best estimate but you should never rely on it or treat it as a promise.

We should've had a webpage showing a burndown chart or number of bugs to squash before release or something so we don't have to keep asking "are we there yet" every day.

It really doesn't work like that. They can't just say "only one bug left to fix!" or whatever, since that one bug can potentially expose other bugs, plus it's easily possible to discover bugs at the last minute that they decide they can't ship with, so what seemed like an imminent release can turn out to be delayed for longer than originally foreseen.

I can't see such an endeavor doing anything except making people more angry and saying "but you said it was almost done! You promised!" (That already happened in this thread even without a chart.) Instead of asking "are we there yet", you could just, you know, wait. It's done when it's done. Clearly they expect it to be done pretty soon, but asking for a specific number of days before release is quite futile.

What was 4.5 wanted for? I forget it's been so long. 4.6 is wanted for uGUI. 5.0 is wanted for uGUI, PBR and a long list of other things.

They've used #.5 in the past to roll out major features.
