    hi, guys

i need help here, in terms of courses and studies related to programming as a designer and animator. preferably with the use of unity. if you know someone who can help please direct them to this tread.

right so a few months ago i became fascinated with programming games in an interactive way and found unity. now after trying things out and looking around at what people and companies have done I've decided i wanted to take things seriously not just as a hobby. i know there are plenty of aspects in programming, from artist to "code checker" (i think there called engineers) to designer to Fx. not to mention animator. i personally want to go into for designer but want to include animator in what i can do. so i'm looking for courses that would get me to a level where i can include game designer and animator in my CV. i personally don't think online courses are the way to do for me but i absolutely don't want to learn it through colledge or university.(here in SA we get 12 grades at school and high school (also known as matrics)after which we apply for uni.)

all in all i'd like to know what i have to look for in Australia/new Zealand area (i'm planning to study there)
pls not mention any online courses unless they are worth it and accredited.
    please include expected fee.

    thanks in advance

If you don't want to take classes online or offline, there's not a lot we can recommend as that's pretty much your only options.

Plenty of game dev schools in the major Australian cities. (Seriously, Melbourne is saturated with educational institutes). I believe Auckland and Wellington have them too.

Failing that there is the learn section.

I purchased 'this' (got for a discounted price) and watched some other tutorials online and that's how I really got off the ground. If you want to learn you have to be really motivated and look for new things everyday. Things will come eventually if you really have the desire. Goodluck! @3dproject

You may want to try creating an account and waiting a few days before purchasing any courses. @Teila mentioned in another thread that a coupon usually arrives with a discount code.

I took that Udemy course, but I was already a programmer and just didn't know how to use Unity. Udemy does a good job at understanding the minimal amount of where stuff is in Unity and how to access it as far as the Editor goes. It does not really teach you much in the programming aspect.

I reckon you are gonna have a lot of troubles learning programming, as you refuse to take classes at school or online classes you have already made your scope extremely small and limited. Coming into this with a negative aspect on everything, you will have a tough time.

yeah I've been doing some research on the whole. since long term seminars aren't really available for coding. i thunk i will take the online option. and then apply for a recognition of prior learning. as well as creating small games as a proof that i know the stuff.

you can also learn by stealing other people's hard work and edit it... I learnt most things this way :p

Well Youtube tutorials are the best way for a free and uncredited way to learn, AIE is a thing should look at though if you haven't already, it also does online courses and has a few number of campuses within Australia, the Designer course might be what you're looking for. I highly recommend it.... although it might be a bit pricey :3

That is SO incorrect. Bill Gates was a college drop out and now he's the world's richest man ever. All he (3dproject) would have to do is read his biography in his spare time. And get someone to help him learn, or get a mentor who is just a person that knows what he needs to know, and that is willing to teach him.

The second one won't work as well, unless his mentor is his friend which was the case for Bill Gates, as he was continuously reading books, and learning along side his 2 friends (which I'm not sure if they were also college dropouts or not). All he needed was some programming skills, a pair of friends with similar desires and there you go.

The best advice I can give you (this is to 3dproject) is read Bill Gate's biography while having a very faint and quiet video of Shia LaBeouf's motivational speech looping in the background. Loud enough for your brain to receive the sound waves, but not too loud so it doesn't distract you. And I'm not even joking, many people may have made Shia LaBeouf the meme lord because of the video, and they may have overused it in every single piece of editing in their youtube channels. But it really does motivate you if you concentrate on what you're trying to achieve in life and listening to the speech repeatedly.

Just focus on what you want, and not how you're gonna get it. And the answer will come to you if you focus, and as long as you try to achieve your goals sensibly.

Well I taught myself to code in 82, without manuals or anything. I'm sure people these days can put a bit of effort in. If not then I don't know what to say.

Bill gates attended one of the best prep schools where he was given the very rare opportunity (at the time) to get into computers before anyone else followed by two years at Harvard where he learned everything they could teach him about computers. So, how exactly am I wrong?

Well for one, you just added a new option for him, since a prep school is not a college nor a university, and you said if he doesn't want to partake in online or offline classes there's not much you can recommend him, since those are his 'only' options. Also Bill Gates didn't just make and work with computers all his life. He founded the whole of Microsoft, which is computers, laptops, consoles, smart phones, smart watches, all the Windows operating systems, accessories, gadgets, etc.

I also never said you are wrong, I just said that your statement was incorrect. And when something is incorrect, it's not just random garbage spewed out, it's mostly a valid statement, only it is either delivered in the wrong way, or it is not fully evaluated upon and therefore may make little sense to some people.
