UFPS is a fine piece of software, but it kinda bums me out that it still doesn't quite "feel" right (any modes). I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's something off with the mouse look.
(It's also not a super lightweight solution, not being intergrated with the engine as such)

Sucks that you can essentially just fire up a UE3/4 demo, anything in the source engine, etc and go "aah, that's the right feel". Given how Unity abstracts so much away, to allow people to crack on with building, it doesn't seem too much to ask for a decent basic character controller setup/component out of the box. (Though Opsive seems to be doing pretty well atm, I'm sure they'd disagree!)

I'd be wary of anyone claiming they can build you a solid solution for cheap/quickly/in an afternoon. The builtin character controller is woefully inadequate and requires a good bit of work to cover the endless corner cases and geometry configurations.

We used Kinetic Character Controller for Ziggurat 2. Basicalle we used it as an improved an updated character controller and we built the rest on top of it.
