Fortunately you have a fairly common name (I do too for that matter). Your forum posts would likely end up buried unless they threw in additional keywords like "Unity". Searching for your name turned up a lawyer and a dentist. :p

Just out of curiosity though. Did you forget that your Patreon has your old name? Or did they just not allow you to modify it?

Wouldn't be hard to take it to a private discussion but there isn't much of a point since to my knowledge there aren't any real strategy documents (I grew up around it like @Teila). We simply focus on becoming better acquainted with the subject material and becoming better teachers.

Just about every non-religious topic we cover, and for that matter any "strategies", could be applied to teaching any subject like Unity. Jumping into the Getting Started section and assisting people who are just starting is almost a form of practice.

I think that if I were to launch some sort of big deal company I'd get a different account for it, and have my brand manager, Mr. Branden Forcements, to handle all of it.

I wouldn't worry about someone googling my name and finding my forum posts. That's why I stuck both the first initial and the year I was born onto the last name...unless the search engine does wildcard(partial word results) searching, it won't find it with just the first or last name. And if you directly search for kburkhart84, you probably know what you are looking for anyway.

Pure laziness. I still have to get around to changing a bunch of the minor places I have accounts, Patreon, Itch, Github, Bitbucket.... the list goes on for a while. I go through phases of activity with each site, so next time I have a burst of activity I'll do the update.

That explains a few observations then. The Mormons have manuals, handbooks and training for everything. The JW visits always felt less structured and purposeful by comparison. Which makes sense if the whole system is more organic.

This is true, and not just of the forums either. Many of the soft skills I've derived from my religion have been useful in the workplace or in day to day life. And vice versa.

Ha, well well, my dormmate next door used to say kiwasi all the time in the 80s. It was supposed to be some sort of witchdoctor chant or so he said. He also said watusi all the time too.

I recall seeing the name change... one day BM was conversing with me over my silly Timer class as BM, the next I had to do a double take when things had been said that I knew were by BoredMormon, but the name had changed to Kiwasi. It was pretty confusing. Didn't know you could change your name on these boards! :p

I have to say it was surprising, but somehow not surprising because I'd heard that happens to many Mormons (they become disenchanted with the religion). Just never expected that to happen with BoredMormon.

On a related note (and meaning not to run afoul of the rules)... according to my roommate apparently getting kicked out of catholic school and becoming an atheist is a pretty common thing. I literally cheered the day that happened >_< following right in my parents footsteps... :p that happened at an early age and I haven't even looked back to reconsider. I can't say I can relate to BM's change, because I've never practiced any religion. Not sure what that's like.

I have to confess that for a considerable time, I thought his name was BoredMoron

Honestly, it's not that I didn't like him or anything like that (on the contrary, I normally find his posts to be quite helpful and friendly) but I just thought it was some sort of a self-depreciating humor.

I'd like to blame the fact that it's not common to see any Mormons where I live, and the sect is normally referred to using its full name here ('The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints').

Anyway, I'm glad that he feels happy with his new name, and I'll try to remember it correctly this time :)

Until this thread I actually never noticed the second 'm' in his name. Made me feel pretty moronic. :)

I do have to admit, that was a secondary reason for changing the name. :D

A bit late to the discussion, but in case you're a Redditor there's an entire subreddit dedicated to ex-mormons and seems to provide a lot of support, and a place to discuss the transition when it's often difficult in your local community.

Yeah, but I also remember my father being shunned for some time by his family for getting a divorce. I wonder if that was in the manuals. :( I grew up around it to some extent, but the memories were not good. I loved my father's extended family because they were good people, in spite of some of the things they did because it was part of their religion.

Just to let you know....not all is good. I am a humanist these days, and I have learned to respect other's beliefs. Just wish it went both ways sometimes. :)

Sorry you had to deal with that, its not easy for anyone involved. There are scriptural and practical reasons for the 'shun' and it is never invoked lightly. It's a very serious decision considered only when there is serious wrongdoing involved. Without knowing the scriptural reasons behind how it works it's completely understandable that you felt that way and most people do feel the same way until it is explained. Either way, as free moral agents it's everyone's right to choose to disagree with the scriptures. I mean, we wouldn't be here otherwise.

This is certainly not an appropriate place to discuss this, though. If you would like more information or to talk about it you can pm me directly.

The Bible itself makes mention of how this is treated, and being a religion heavily centered around accurate understanding and application of it we try to follow it to the best of our ability, but that's stepping into a discussion that isn't appropriate to these forums so I'm just going to leave it at that.

Sorry to hear this. I would hope at least some of the memories were positive, but either way I do know from observing other relationships, and from my own research, that problems in life often affect children the most.

Fortunately I don't have to deal with that in leaving the Mormon religion. The Mormon religion encourages increased fellowship with members who go astray, in an attempt to bring them back into the fold. Human's being what they are, this can have strange side effects. For a while after we left we had a string of visitors from church offering to help us out with anything we needed, and generally trying to make friends with us. Which was a bit bizarre considering very few of those same people had spoken to us on Sundays. I've had several other friends report the same phenomenon.

Not entirely sure what to call myself these days. My beliefs about the universe align me with materialism and atheism. But as yet I haven't subscribed to any specific moral theory. I'm currently taking each decision as it comes.

I'm also not especially good at respecting others beliefs. Especially not when some of those beliefs actively harm me and mine.

Still, this is all new territory to me. So who knows where I will end up.

Absolutely. When I say beliefs, I do not mean EVERYTHING one believes, only their spiritual/religious belief that does no harm. There are extremists in every culture, in every society who do bad things, often in the name of religion, or whatever else they think justifies their behavior.

Just like what we would do if you mistakenly/haphazardly stumbled into UE forums. We'd attempt to bring you back into the fold. I'd use force and threats but other tacts might be more welcoming. :D
This isn't a phenomenon - it's phase one of the play book. No negative connotation here - it's just how they bring in new people or those who have chosen a different path. It is weird though how the interactions change on Sundays.

You don't need to go to the UE4 (you do mean Unreal Engine, right?) forums for that. With the way we keep bringing up topics comparing engines the Unity fans come across as actively trying to convert people to Unreal. At least when the moderators don't lock the threads.

    ???

I use this definition for phenomenon 'a fact or situation that is observed to exist or happen'.

Under that definition you can call pretty much anything a phenomenon. Its just scientific short hand for writing 'the thing that happened that we noticed'. And scientists love using obscure shorthand.

LOL Sorry for the mistake - I grew up in the mountains. Phenomenons there were something that happens when its dark and can't be explained without a disconnect from reality - like volcanic or swamp gas deaths and such.

I think the confusion comes from the word "phenomenal" which I've only ever heard or seen used in reference to something exceptional.
