I missed that thread, since I haven't been really active lately.

    @Kiwasi

What were your motivations for doing this?
How did you request this from the forum admins, and how cooperative were they about the change?

He's either no longer bored, or no longer Mormon.

Yeah although I understand the name change was probably something to do with religion (not putting people off or whatever)... the old BoredMormon had character. There was a real personality there religious larp fanatic. In contrast Kiwasi seems like just a generic dime a dozen character. Not sure why that is really.

The term is "formon" as in "former mormon", and possibly the same for "formerly bored".

Same for me but I remember him or someone mentioning it at one point.

Ah well I think just a matter of getting used to it. If it had been Kiwasi all along I am sure I would view Kiwasa differently than I do BoredMormon. I feel like I kind of "know" BoredMormon but this Kiwasi character not sure what to think yet. lol

My only problem is that he changed his name on youtube too so I keep getting confused when I search for "Boredm" and no results pop up.

But who are we summoning now when we @boredmormon? :D
And this will be extra confusing for newer members who look back through older threads - with references to our friendly nuclear engineer.

Guys I'm flattered. Its been a while since there has been a thread just dedicated to me.

On the 28th of June, slightly before 1:40 am, Melbourne time.

I did some some soul searching a while back that ended up with me no longer being a Mormon. For a while I attempted to keep the same brand, I had built up a bit of internet notoriety around it. But it felt dishonest using it. I decided to bite the bullet and change it.

I can talk more about my specific reasons for leaving the Mormon religion off line if anyone wants to know. Discussing them here would certainly push the no religion rule.

    https://support.unity3d.com/hc/en-us/articles/205053589-How-do-I-change-my-username-

The change was processed within about 4 hours of submitting the request. No questions asked.

That's actually good news to me. The name was deliberately chosen to be more generic. I didn't want a name that implied I was a certain type of person. Because who I am can change. I used to think being a Mormon was a fundamental part of my identity. That's changed. LARP might currently be a big part of my life, but there is no reason for me to assume it still will be in five years.

Yeah, sorry about that. That was one of the reasons I took so long to change over.

The tag still links to my profile, but I didn't get a notification for the mention.

I didn't know the acronym, and for some reason in my head the association was made with carp until I paid more attention. Makes more sense than being a religious carp fanatic :) .

For some reason I always though that the your nickname may not be an indicator of your beliefs and could be something else.

I have multiple nicknames which were formed by random combination of words. Current one is one of those, it just turned out that this one fits.

But either way, whatever floats your boat, as they say.

Sooo…you quit one LARP to try others?

I rather like the name Kiwasi and the picture that goes with it. :) Congrat's, Kiwasi, on your soul searching and ability to find a new path. I wish you the best of luck and hope you will always be happy, regardless.

Exactly. The key difference with this one is everyone acknowledges we are just pretending.

Thought about it. For the most part my family are still in the church, so I don't want to rock the boat too much.

At least you didn't change your avatar at the same time, that is confusing enough by itself. Sometimes I wonder if people noticed I changed mine or if they think I'm some totally new rando stranger.

I've got a few suggestions from friends, but more wouldn't hurt. It turns out a bunch of us from highschool have gone through the same sort of journey. Ironically we've all kept it quiet to avoid rocking the boat with family. Which meant we've all gone through the transition alone. Which is one of the reasons I've changed the name. I don't want to imply to anyone that knows me that I'm still Mormon.

I've considered getting more involved with the former Mormon community. Perhaps even starting up my own YouTube channel to share my thoughts and experiences. Its a fine balance between supporting friends and maintaining relationships with family. Its still a decision that's up in the air, I haven't chosen which way to move on this one yet.

Interestingly I generally notice right away when regulars change their avatar, especially when it's a pretty significant change like yours. :) I didn't, however even notice that BoredMormon changed his name to Kiwasi... I just associated the avatar with the posts I guess and some day I probably would have been browsing around and wondered "What ever happened to BM?"

You have time to think about it. I deal with this constantly, that need to be true to myself and the need to respect family and their beliefs. It is not easy, but I have found that most family members feel the same way. We are family first and then whatever else second. So I hope it all turns out well for you.

On the other hand, find a good support group, people like you. It will help a great deal.

If it makes you feel better my overly religious mother is on her way over. Its only fair to have your family respect your beliefs and way of life if they expect it in return. When everyone does that because family is first all of the emotional defensive stances get dropped and it makes for interesting and real conversation.

I do not feel bad so it does not make me fee better. Honestly, my parents' needs are different than mine at this stage in their lives and I respect that. They have no need to change for me. :)

It's a weird situation. In order to remain true to their beliefs, my parents must try and reconvert me. Or at least convince themselves that they have done everything in their power to do so. Being a Mormon isn't consistient with letting someone you care about not be a Mormon. It's lead to some very tense conversations.

Like most of real life, fairness doesn't come into it.

Ironically, I haven't checked back here regularly because I've been out and about playing raid after raid on Pokemon Go, with large groups where I am. It's been crazy all week.

Anyway, I appreciate your candor, @Kiwasi. I'm of the same thinking of what @GarBenjamin noted, about a sort of difference in character. But to be fair, I haven't been on the forums as frequently as before, so it could just be me.

My father was raised Jehovah Witness and all through my life I have been visited by the JW because my grandparents and other relatives would give the local JW's my address. I know they did it out of love so while I wanted to slam the door in their face, I was always nice. They seem to have given up on me though finally since I have not had one here for several years. I still remember opening the door on a Saturday morning while in college, after a night out with friends, and having to deal with this. :) I cannot imagine being in my grandparent's shoes. They truly believed they had lost all of us and that must have been painful. Fortunately, we had a good relationship regardless and that did help.

Some areas we have only a relative few compared to the size of the area. With only so many people to cover a territory it can take years to get around to one location and even then people aren't always at home the day we pass by an area.

That is not true here as there is a large headquarters very close by. :) It is okay. I am a hopeless cause when it comes to this sort of thing so best that they have stopped coming by. They can spend their time in better ways.

And that is kind of why I just made my username what it is. I may change preferences, game company names(if I ever get a real company going), and other things about me. But my first initial and last name aren't going anywhere.

I had the J-dubs showing up once. But since it was me answering the door that was the last time :)
(Amazing that they even found the door. It's a hobbit hole in a cave under an old house.)

That's the cool part about choosing a generic-ish name...some things never change. And FYI I did just LOL at that quote too.

Yeah, that's the goal with Kiwasi. It doesn't mean anything, so it doesn't need to go anywhere if anything changes. I considered first name - last name, but I don't want 14,000 forum posts showing up on an employers Google search.

We still have the missionaries and the home teachers visit occasionally. Which is the Mormon equivalent. They tend to be fairly polite and respectful, and I tend to respond in kind. Most of the time it doesn't even come up that I'm atheist. If their religion is currently working for them, I don't see it as my responsibility to dismantle it for them.

My parents is another story. For them the news is still relatively new and tender. And it doesn't help that they know all of my hot buttons in the way only immediate family can. My intention is to repair and maintain my relationship there, but right now we all need to cool down a little first.

I've always been curious to see the JWs internal strategy documents or discuss it. I did the Mormon missionary thing. Superficially we got compared to the JWs a lot, we were both annoying people knocking on doors wanting to talk about religion. But from what I observed the general strategy and tactics were vastly different.

Anyway, PM me if you are interested in having that discussion offline. I've probably already overstepped the rules enough in this post.

This is an interesting point - weather to associate ones personal persona with a company (indie dev) or be completely THE company without a personal identity.

Personally I would like to be thought of as a person - completely separate and unrelated to a/the company who creates products/games. However this is difficult when setting up a company that is largely based on one persons talents, creations and earnings. It is a difficult balancing act - especially when the main reason for wanting to be separate from the company is not to tie personal beliefs/opinions directly to the company or product/content created by the company.

I can understand why this was a thorough and complex decision to make - even if the issues I mentioned weren't considered.
