I'd say you've become a master when you have some games on iOS/Android/web and have people playing those and talking about those.

I have a game on Steam and I don't feel a Unity master... hell, not even close.

I'd say it's very difficulty to say it in a such a broad context as there are so many different areas of knowledge. Unity specific on one hand but also game technologies and software development in general. So I'll probably never say I master it...more like x years of experience doing this and this kind of stuff.

When can you say you've mastered anything?

I used to play guitar, but I felt I was pretty terrible at it. Could only play a few songs, standard chords, etc. My brother, compared to me, is a master of guitar, but he's amateur-level compared to my brother-in-law. Even still, there are things he cannot do or has never attempted. And even on things he knows well, he's still capable of making a mistake.

What's your definition of mastering something? To know everything there is to know about it? To be better at doing it than almost everyone else? To attain a high-level professional (read: paid) position in the skill?

If your goal is to put "Unity3D master" on your resume, just... don't. It's a meaningless claim that won't help you get a job anyway. If it's more for your own personal goals, change your way of thinking. Don't try to master Unity. Just use it. A lot. Chances are, for each thing you learn, you'll discover 12 things you know nothing about. Learn those too, if you want. Some day you may get to the point where you can't find anything else you don't know, and I suppose at that point you can call yourself a Unity Master.

Although in my opinion, any time I see someone who claims to be a master of anything, chances are they're the ones who really understand the least.

Never. The engine is too big and there are too many technologies involved.

The circle is now complete. When I left unity3d.com/learn, I was but the learner. Now I am the master.

When you've completed your version of Skyrim same scope (you can use free graphics, music and sound assets). As long as you complete your own Skyrim scale game with no more bugs than Skyrim has (which seems to give you a lot of leeway but the scale is such that it will be easy to have loads of bugs slip in) you'll be worthy of the title.

Once you have that done and it is fully playable truly complete you can probably safely say you have mastered Unity. Then when you can do it all again better (drawing on the experience picked up the first time around) and complete it less than 1,000 hours you can call yourself simply The Master.

Considering there's nobody working at Unity, who understands all of the source, I would say mastering Unity is actually impossible. Mastering something never happens. There are no masters, only people who are considered masters by others. Where that line is will be purely subjective.

I expect to NEVER be a master of Unity. That would involve learning absolutely everything it can do and being able to wield/leverage it to its full potential. I am interested only in knowing what I need to know to get a particular job done, and being aware of how it limits me so that I can work around it.

I have a different perspective than you guy.
Unity different from guitar because with 9 fingers, 6 strings, 14 cell(or whatever it called) you can create a few hundreds of combination, maybe thousands, then use a string of those combination to create an infinity amount of songs. I don't think there that much to do in Unity.
By Unity, I mean the IDE and the API that only come with it. That doesn't include C#, which I totally agree no one can master since it an art on itself, just like guitar-there no limitations other than your imagination.
For me master Unity just like master photoshop: you may not create the best photo but you can do anything your clients ask for, because you know all the tools like part of your body and how to use them in the most efficient way possible, not necessarily the most creative.

Consider yourself a master when you can tackle any task in Unity in a reasonable amount of time.

Or when you are like me. I'm a master at pretty much everything I do.

If that were on a resume that came across my desk it'd probably hurt. It stinks of ego. It makes me doubt your ability as a team member, because it implies to me that you'd rather tell than listen - because you already think you know it all.

In any case, Unity is just a tool. Mastering Unity is like mastering the hammer. Nobody gives a stuff how good you are with a hammer. They care about the speed, cost and quality of the houses/furniture/cars/whatever that you build with the hammer. And those are tasks you can master. You could feasibly build a piece of furniture which can not reasonably be improved upon within its constraints. Same deal with many of the things you might build with Unity.

If I get your resume and you're trying to convince me that you're rad with any tool then I want to know about the things you've done with it. Results are far more impressive than self assessed superiority.

At some point when development of Unity has stopped and there is a finite amount of knowledge of it to be had. No sign of that any time soon - serious time management and constant learning is the cross we've chosen to bear!

Off topic, but how about job postings that look for things like "Ruby on Rails Ninja" or "Javascript Guru"? The only thing that makes me cringe more than people trying to sell themselves as something they clearly aren't is when companies (probably recruiters in these cases) are asking for something they don't understand in the slightest, which likely results in them acquiring someone that doesn't remotely meet their real need.

Typical mastery of a complex skill requires 10 years or 10,000 hours. That does not mean a person can do everything perfectly within that skill. It usually just means they are very proficient and can accomplish things quickly using that skill. Generally speaking, a person with 10 years (or 10,000 hours) of experience can quickly learn the new things that come up with respect to the complex skill.

The 10 years or 10,000 hours is merely an estimate. A better way to measure mastery is by considering the four stages of competence. Here is a link about the four stages of competence:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_stages_of_competence

A lot of new Unity users seem to get stuck in the "unconscious incompetence" stage, and keep asking "Did I master it yet?" This seems to be especially true with young people who have not gone through the four stages of competence with other complex skills yet.

I'd say if you can build skynet with Unity you've probably mastered it.

Looking at the Four stages of competence it feels like game development will make sure that one jumps back and forth between stages 1-2 due to constant advances with a few stints in 3 every now and then on an occasional Friday.

Yes..it's Friday today..let it be one of those Fridays!

Yeah I'm generally a mish-mash of stages 1, 2 and 3. Except for anything audio related, where I am very much stuck on stage -6.

You need to pass the three trials. Sword mastery, treasure huntery, and thievery! Then, and only then, you can call yourself a pirat- Unity Master!
