I've been using GIMP since the late-nineties when all I had was a Linux box. There are a few things that Photoshop can do that GIMP can't (or can do quicker), and those few things make it worth the price for me (though not worth it enough to upgrade past the version I have), but I spend most of my time in GIMP just because I'm so familiar with the interface that I can get most things done much quicker in that software.

PS: GIMP is a kickbutt software too. :)

A lot of cool things here :) Photoshop seems to have more options for me, that's why I enjoy it. Plus It is boss, GIMP is nice too, I also use paint.net a lot of the time as well.

Photoshop, $9.99 a month subscription, best value out there (aside from Unity now being free :))

I use AseSprite for pixel art and animations then Inkscape for nice vector art (Think flash style) and Gimp for textures. Never used paint.net but it looks good.

If you don't mind spending a little, Pyxel has been incredible for pixel art. I am most definitely not art-capable in any regard, but Pyxel is magic.

I use an extremely old Paint Shop Pro 9 - it does everything I need, brilliantly well (and has done so for many years now).

I was about to mention Paintshop Pro! I freaking love it.
I haven't had any issues with it, way more user friendly than Photoshop and can practically do just as much, aside from 3d models inside it lol.
Which I didn't really care so much about but yeah lol.

Photoshop has a LOT of utilities that make it better than MOST of software out there.
