What's the syntax to invoke a Java function in DayDream?

The transition from a 2D screen to VR through VRSettings.enabled does not produce a splash screen of "Put your device into DayDream if a controller is paired. I see that there's a Java API for DayDream, but I'm not sure how to use the function signatures to invoke them:

@scihuman, are you launching from VrHome or the 2D Android launcher?
Can you check whether transition screens have been disabled in VrCore settings? That is accessible via the gear icon (in a VR UI view) > Developer Options.
