What's the deal with those cryptic user names lately?

I noticed many new users have cryptic names recently, such as unity_k2l-aLPoNdoYrQ, for example. I would understand when one comes up from time to time, but it seems like there are a lot recently.

    Any idea why?

Unity needs to sort this out. I don't think it's acceptable to have a forum where an increasing number of usernames are a randomly assigned string of jibberish. This is a community after all and the contributors here need to be recognizable.

I connect via my Google Account, so it must auto generate a name, skipping account name choice.

I generally don't even bother opening threads when the OP's username is jibberish.

Unity has an evil streak when it comes to web development. :p

It's Unity's problem, I raised it a while ago but doesn't seem they mind or care at this point. The answer was that the user can change their own username if they so choose to.

Like Lanefox though, I tend to avoid gibberish usernames.

There is another possibility but it hinges on (a) moderators being able to change usernames and (b) admins not getting really ticked off from someone going through and changing them without a valid reason. :p

    Thanks for asking this.

So maybe we should start a list of names that mods can force on unsuspecting users:

I followed the instruction, but my username did not change yet. Perhaps there is delay in databases. As said above, this seems to be what happens when you login with your google or facebook instead of directly. I always choose the google option because it is easier than creating multiple logins for every place. When I came here, I checked the profile page to alter my username but could not find anything. I will see if my username changes with time, since I have followed the instruction.

@Tzan This is why you don't give mods such silly ideas, tempting use of their powers simply as indulgence to their godly whims. I hope you have learned an important lesson here. You shall remain branded until MOD has turned attention to some other unfortunate mortal plaything.

It's one of the few escapes from the bitter hate machine called the general user base.

These names are being generated when a user creates an account using their Google or Facebook login. We're currently looking into how to prevent these auto-generated names from happening.

In the mean time, feel free to report that you see with this issue to us and we can reach out to them to inform them as to how to change it.

Mods can't change user names. If they could, I would have changed everyone's name to "Wibble" by now.
