For 500 McDonalds is probably a quicker option then game development. None of the methods you mentioned are especially quick

    You could also look at
    • Freelance contracting
    • Government grants
    • Tutoring
    • Crowd funding

Getting a job is the only way to be sure to earn money. You probably stand a better chance of winning $500 playing the lottery than getting it from a random asset on the asset store.

Have to agree with @drewradley, @LaneFox, and @BoredMormon. And, even under 18, there certainly must be 'off-the-books' kinds of jobs like yardwork, babysitting, or apprenticeships. Any of those is a faster route.

Then ask your parents/guardians as you cannot even sell on the asset store either.

And where do you live that 16 cannot legally work?

Don't get me wrong, you can make money on making indie games. Its just not a fast process.

From the choices you offer. I'd say it is more likely to make $500 with the AssetStore in the shortest amount of time.
But that isn't easy either, nor is it really fast.
You have to create something worthwhile that people actually want and that takes some time to produce. But at least it's not as crowded as the mobile app stores and people willing to pay decent money if your product is good.

Not to mention if you make assets that are not game engine dependent (ie artwork assets), then you can spread them to other stores like the Unreal and Stingray marketplaces.

    Sell your computer. :p

It really depends on your skills. If game dev is the only option then I'd say contract work, but if you don't have a folio of work then it might be hard to get contracts.

I'd pick contracting as well. Go to the commercial job offering forum and spam people until you get a bite.

Considering that's the entire point of the Job Offering forum, and as long as you don't repeatedly spam the same person, no one should actually care.

You can't actually post in those forums. You have to contact the thread owner either through contact details in their post or through the forum's internal private messaging system. It sounds like you're thinking of the Job Seeking forum.

Ideally the contract will specify what is required of you. If you feel you cannot meet the requirements, then you simply don't accept the job and look for a different one. Make sure you are aware of any expectations before you sign a contract.

Yeah I'm out now. You can't run with help me out guys, I'm desperate for cash, and then turn down a major source of income for indie developers because you don't like it.

I mean if there is a simple project I can complete in hours and given a week to do, I take the contract and I fell ill, I could do that but because of health I could not. Penalty will still apply :(

What are the actual chances you're going to fall sick enough that you cannot do any work at all? This past year I've had three colds, a throat virus (literally could not speak at all), and the flu. Not one of them kept me off my computer.

Penalties for failing to deliver on a simple contract are usually not getting paid. That's it. If anyone is charging you for non completion, then run for the hills.

Dunno. Didn't check age. But you can still do cash work.

If that is the case then I believe they would likewise be the ones liable for a failure to meet the contract.

If there was a quick & easy way to make $500 as a game dev then everyone here would be doing it. All you can do is look for any job in any industry that you are physically able to do then just do it & save hard. If you will only accept jobs that you like then you probably don't really want the $500

I don't want to be mean and I'm just trying to help you with this but if you need the money quickliy, try to get a part time job or whatever.

I went through your post history to get an idea of what kind of skill level you have. There's absolutely no shame in being a beginner. Everyone starts as one. But it's just been 3 months that you asked a question where the problme was that you didn't know about overflows. I grabbed the first book teaching a programming language I found in my library and overflows are first mentioned on page 29.
What I want to say is, that you have a long way to go. Don't let it discourage you! It's absolutely doable with enough passion and time. But if you want to make money short term, keep looking for alternatives. People spend years upon years learning autodidact or even at a university just to get to a point where they have enough skills that someone might consider paying them for their work and you're only at the very beginning of that journey.

The C# Yellow Book uses the term "wrap round" and discusses it on page 27. If the OP has not had a chance to do so they may want to grab the book and go through it. Ideally doing the exercises in addition to reading it.

You've been playing too much Game Dev Story. In real life, not getting paid and having your reputation suffer is penalty enough.

If there was a fast way to make money in game dev, and anyone here knew what it was, we'd all live in golden houses and drive cars made of Rolexes. Work that pays well quickly is difficult and it sucks (ex: intense manual labor). Work that is chill and fun and can be done quickly pays almost nothing. I don't believe there's such a thing as easy money.

If you're in trouble with the Indian mafia or something, borrowing or begging is going to be a faster and more profitable option. If you're trying to get your start as a game developer, put in the time and go for years without making any money like everyone else. :)

Oh my god, I didn't even notice you were the idle engine guy. It all makes more sense now.

What you really need, guy, is to just keep cranking stuff out. Keep making things and keep improving. I know you feel like you've gotten the hang of everything already, but trust me... there's so much more you don't know yet.

At my job, I have to work with a lot of freelance stuff that comes from Indian developers. Most of it is garbage. It could just be coincidence, but I can't help but think that there's an attitude in your country's developer culture that seems to think once you can throw a basic program together, you're a master. Maybe you can get a job done quickly, but when none of your code is even indented properly, it suggests to me you blew too quickly through some of the fundamentals.

Slow down and enjoy your learning journey. Learn common practices and conventions. And focus more on creating a clean, useful product than just trying to get stuff to market and make a quick buck. Just my advice.
