What will be the standout Unity games of 2017?

    Self promotion allowed!

Personally I think "Hello I am Orb" could be my standout game of 2017

What will be your or another's standout Unity game in 2017?

Or maybe I will manage to get Oubreak SRZero up to the level of a standout game in 2017!

Is this simply a self promo thread, or are you really asking which games will be standout this year?

Unity is a democratic game engine so please present Unity games you know about that you think will standout this year and/or Unity games you are working on that are your best work to date.

I personally didn't get 'I am orb' but I thought your crysis mod was a great start.

Exactly. Pokemon Go is a prime example of a standout hit made with Unity that basically nobody predicted. There are some really nice looking Unity games in the works, but I suspect the standout hits for 2017 will likely be surprises.

Hover: Revolt of Gamer. I really like it and it's made with Unity. It just hasn't been talked about here at all.

I don't get why we didn't see this game in made with unity, but Yandere simulator is shaping up to be a very nice game!

Social + stealth game inspired by hitman, with some good innovations but some otaku weeb creeps undertone  , though he is starting to tone them down as the game pick up huge success even in the alpha state.

I wanna know the shaders he's using. I know the models but I don't think those are stock shaders either.
Now onto the actual game, I've been following it and it's gonna become a great game when and if he finishes it.

I believe you can produce this kind of results with simplest outline shader and flat textures + a bit of post effects (I see ambient occlusion here). There are also few free anime models on asset store that have those shaders included and preconfigured to look right.

"bullied a girl by cutting her swimsuit with a pair of scissors".. game objective... you have to kill her with a pair of scissors while wearing a swimsuit.. jeeez lol

The game is just weird so I tried out the alpha demo....

Well it kept me entertained for abit :D though its not my thing as for as the storyline. More amusing if anything because of the absurdity of it but I couldn't see myself wanting to bother with its actual game objectives. Clearly a success though, without the game even being finished, like youtube/patreon following. I wouldn't be surprised if more developers don't go this route.

I don't know if the success is repeatable with any random idea. The main thing is the clarity of the concept.

It's a bunch of generic cliché pushed into the right mix to get notable. It taps into the yandere mythos (a type of insane anime character, ie the murdurous stalker girlfriend), put it in traditional anime setting (schools), with a gameplay that makes a perfect fit but distinct in a niche genre (stealth). It automatically attracts the weeb who get the concept (was first presented on 4chan ... of course).

Others are attracted by a perfectly clear pitch (love, school, crime of passion) with clear drama and clear objective, the rules of the world are intuitive and mirror real life which mean little time spent on exposition, and it has its own mythos grewing organically. It's both unique (there is no other things like it) and generic (the concept are easily understandable).

Asset flipping also gave the game good look before the unique asset start being developed, and the generic setting helpt finding asset that where perfect fit. On top of that the author run with the idea, by innovating organically with the concept, in a genre that often pains to find his voice and explain itself (why there is fighting in my stealth game?), and also pain to get out the typical tired setting of secret agent assassin.

This looks like a case of perfect storm IMHO.

Assuming it lands in 2017 I'm most excited for Prey for the Gods. With Manifold Garden a close second.... I just want to battle huge monsters and look at impossible architecture.

Particularly keen on Tokyo 42 and Cuphead this year. Tokyo 42 blew my mind at Double Fine's Day of the Devs event last November.

If cup head actually gets finished. I do worry that they are setting them selves up for a no man's sky, having the game hyped for so many years before release.

Please, don't just post the game's name it only takes a few seconds to get a link to a trailer/screenshots that show off the game you are talking about.

I am really looking forward to Tokyo 42. It reminds me a bit of Syndicate and this one Amiga 1200 game I never got to play, because I had a 500+. Pure nostalgia!

I had the amiga 500 and was able to play Syndicate. Maybe cause I had the expansion?
Loved that game and thought exactly the same when I saw the trailer of Tokyo 42, although I must say I prefer the mood of Syndicate.

    EDIT
Forget that, I misread your message.

I'm looking forward to a game that should be released in a few months but it is not made in Unity. How are you finding specific games in development with Unity... from checking all of the posts in the Works In Progress forum?

I find the WIP forum a complete nightmare for actually finding Unity projects as it's always so cluttered with Asset Store projects. Usually I find stuff on TIGSource or the Unity Reddit, though the latter is still a bit of a mess to deal with as far as finding complete games is concerned.

Yeah the problem with the WIP I think is 1) it is a mixture of everything being done in Unity from graphics packs, to scripting assets to games to whatever and 2) many of the "games" there seem to have nothing but just screenshots of the assets being made like there actually isn't any "game" at all yet. Which I guess could be the case many times.

TIG is good. I used to visit it quite often. Haven't been there in about a month or so.

I guess I will cast my vote for @Billy4184's Mobile Space Combat Game (I am sure that is a working title only). His game is progressing quickly, looks superb and "feels" good in the web demo. And from his various posts around here I know he wants to make something special even though this will be a very small scope game.

I believe you or one of your colleagues pointed out Hidden Folks initially. Really intriguing!
Eitr most likely won't get as much media attention as it deserves, it's doesn't have an alt 'social' value agenda or message which a lot of games seem to get overhyped coverage from, but for the more hardcore crowd I think it will be well received.

Another indie Unity offering I'm looking forward to is Somerville, though unknown if it will be out this year.

This game looks so sweet. I've got my eye on the game for a while already and I'm really excited that it comes to Xbox One! Can hardly wait to run around with that little mouse :)

The Ghost of a Tale blog is also interesting, he is posting Unity related development things from time to time.

    shooter - meh. o_O

Really though - extremely impressed with there attention to detail on every aspect of weapons and animations. Unfortunately I don't think the general gamer public will see past - "hey look another hi-fi shooter, meh I'm gonna go play CoD".
Hopefully I'm wrong and its received well.

it depends on the audience it is trying to get, should do well with the audience that wants Stalker + DayZ in one game. But on top of that shooters is very hard market to break into, since not much ever changes in this genre and it has all been done before.

    Indie game called 'Greenlight'.

You play as Micheal Placeholder, a private detective. You progress through an adventure game where nothing is complete, only to discover the final mystery is that "This is just a demo, please support me on Steam Greenlight."

Have you even seen any of the gameplay videos? It's pretty hard to call it "lame as hell". I'm really looking forward to it, the customization of the guns looks really cool. Overall it has a really realistic vibe to it, which is rare in modern FPS games.

Well, when thousands of people torrent the $140 version for free, that's when the developers will know why $140 game packs are not a good idea.

Escape From Tarkov is probably the most impressive Unity title I've seen to date. Regardless if you like the genre or not its scope, attention to detail and visuals are pretty impressive.
