I have an i5 with 32GB RAM running Windows 10. I currently have the latest version of Unity installed, but it's sluggish and crashes frequently. I'd like to downgrade Unity to a version that runs more smoothly on my laptop, while still being suitable for mobile and desktop development. Based on your experience, which Unity version would be best for my PC specs?

    Which i5 exactly?

Crashes almost never have something to do with PC specs.
Do you use an LTS version? Those are more reliable than the actually newest version.

For speed on mid-low hardware, 2019 LTS is indeed the best option. But am not sure how long you can publish to current android or iOS with it anymore (the companies forbid too old SDKs).

Just as important as your hardware, what's in your project? It's easy to tank your performance with a poor script or two, or too much random Asset Store stuff, or too much / unoptimised art content, or...

What i5? What GPU do you have? How much memory do you have? What do the crash logs say? You're giving us no useful information here.

Use CPU-Z to find out exactly which i5 your computer has.

There is a huge variety of i5 CPUs out there. Some of the old laptop i5 CPUs are low clock speed dual core with Intel HD Graphics, which won't run anything well.

Exactly. There's not just one model. An i5 with 32GB RAM could be anything from an i5-2300 (4C/4T @ 2.8GHz) to an i5-13600K (14C/20T @ 3.5GHz). If fully utilized the 13600K is more than 11 times the performance of the 2300.

That's the difference between performance intensive tasks (ie baking lights, creating builds, importing files, etc) going from taking only a few minutes to take a few hours and a few hours to a few days.

Computer tech is advancing at a rapid pace, hard to keep up with now a days. If using Unity on a laptop, you better have the "latest and greatest" hardware, on a PC, you can stretch it a bit (spec-wise), and get by.

But if your into big GFX driven 3D games (1st or 3rd person) with Unity, UnrealEngine, CryEngine, or "in house" studio engines, you really need an i7 rig with a RTX series Nvidia and multiple HD's.
