What kind of mouse do you use in Unity?

    Hey guys!
I'm new to this so please bear with me a little bit.

I'm very interested in getting my feet wet with game development and using Unity.
However, when I'm working in Unity, I'm finding that in order to get my middle mouse button to work, I have to really push down on it. It's been very finicky, so I think it's best to just get a new mouse. I've had this issue with two different mice.

My question is if anyone knows which mouse would work best. Which mouse do you use?

Forgive me if this is an inappropriate section for this.

Any mouse will work fine, i got a cheap 20 dollar mouse and works like a charm, you don't need all that fancy mouses with 30 buttons on it, it's pointless. Yeah it has it's upper end stuff to make life easier (in a game) but how many people really actually use them? Sure serious PC gamers do, but to create one, you can just use an orginate 3 button mouse (left click, right click, and wheel click).

Logitech performance mx is the best mouse imo:

    http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Performance-Mouse-Mac/dp/B002HWRJBM

Not super cheap but worth every penny. I use the extra buttons for back/forth in browsing, it's very comfortable, can use it wireless and recharge the battery wired, and the mousewheel is awesome (it has two modes, one where it moves rat, tat, tat like most mousewheels and the other one where you flick it and it turns without resistance, great for fast scrolling). I've been a professional poker player for a long time and have logged thousands of hours clicking 1-2 times per second on average, tried (and destroyed lol) loads of different devices, this one is the best hands down.

A trackball is awesome too, I actually switch to it every couple of weeks still, you just need to get used to it for a bit and the extra buttons aren't located perfectly.

If you're using your computer a lot you should never save money on decent input devices (including mouse mat).
Still using my trusty old MX518 :)

I am using an old Logitech MX510 for all my work and gaming. There is also small pads under it that I added it so that it can slide around on my IceMat like it was wet ice. This is combined with a wireless keyboard (Logitech K800) and mid-sized Wacom Bamboo tablet covers all my needs.

Don't get hung up on any branded stuff that claims to make you cookies while gaming etc... just ask yourself what you need and spend your money on a quality product that meet those needs and it will be a trusted friend for years (as long as you do not beat it to death against the desk or something like that).

I use a Logitech G400. All I want from a mouse is being comfortable, having a decent mouse-wheel and thumb buttons that I can rebind for old games.

How much have you paid for the keyboard? It's currently ~80€ on Amazon here, which would have been a massive waste of money.
I paid that much for my Steelseries 6GV2, which is a mechanical keyboard.

I use an MX518 too and was super sad last year when it finally broke down. I found another one on eBay though, whew. :)

The G400s is basically the same as the MX518. If your MX518 breaks, it's safe to get the G400s (speaking as a former—not by choice—MX518 user).

Yes, the mechanical keyboards are currently getting hyped a lot.

I love the low, smooth keys on the K800 and it can keep up with me when I am typing really fast, something not every keyboard in history has done. One charge also lasts for a really long time (counting in weeks), even though I sit here, typing every day for hours. Charging wasn't an issue because I keep free USB cables on my desk for all the different devices that I use.
The fact that it is cordless is a benefit in my book because I do lots of different work and often have to move it around to make space or I have to move around with it. The keys are also back-lit, really nice during evenings when I have to work and my girlfriend has to sleep :)

So yeah, it is a perfect fit for me and everyone got a different taste ;) The price is something I cannot comment on though, bought mine a couple of years back...

What more can I say? It has been sturdy so far, it has gotten hit and dropped several times. Survived a pair of coffee accidents, and even people sitting on it  (yeah, it has been lying at stupid places, my own fault).

I'm using a $14 logitech from Wal-Mart. Just as good for Unity as my last $60 Razer!

That said, I'd suggest popping into a BestBuy (or any other outlet that has the mice on display), and physically try out all the mice, particularly if you're finicky about the middle mouse button. Everyone I know has their own preference when it comes to the feel of mouse buttons.

I like the Steel Series mouse. They are ambidextrous and the mouse wheels work well.

Don't buy a cheap mouse, get something decent. Get a laser mouse too.

Price should definitely not be your main focus when buying input devices. If you are going to be spending a lot of time working at your computer you need to get yourself devices that are comfortable for long term use.

You don't want to be stuck with hardware that makes your hand cramp up or can cause injury later on simply because you decided to buy the cheapest devices you could find.

Myself, I've used cheap wireless mice for years, but it's started to get to my wrist...

So, I switched to an ergonomic one. (Didn't even know they existed.) But my wrist soreness is gone, and I can still work for hours. :)

This is the one I got: (wireless) Delux Ergonomic Mouse

    Wired Version: Delux Ergo Mouse

Actually, they look weird at first, but it really seems to fit my hand and it's easy on the arm. (Although, I would make mention that at first it feels like more work to move the mouse around. Meaning, instead of just flicking your wrist to move the cursor, you actually have to use a bit of your arm muscles. Don't notice it anymore. (After the first week, it's natural.)

Hope you get a mouse which fits!

I see. When I built my current machine, I thought about whether mechanical keyboards were all hype or not. Okay, there's the fact that they're far more durable. That's great, but does it justify the increased price? I wasn't sure about that. The only other argument people made was that "typing feels better", which struck me as the kind of placebo nonsense that people say, when they desperately try to justify their extremely overpriced purchases to themselves.

Eventually I decided to go ahead and buy one, because German law allows me to send online purchases back within 14 days (even without a reason).

Bottom-line: Totally worth it. As weird as it sounds, typing on mechanical keyboard does feel better than typing on a rubberdome one. And it's a huge difference; I can tell you that. I think it's due to the fact that you use your keyboard a lot more than you realize.

So speaking as someone who simply bit the bullet, I can guarantee you that mechanical keyboards are not just some overhyped fad; They're totally worth it.

Totally agree. Finally sprung for one about a month ago and I'm completely addicted. Can't recommend them enough, although I would advise people to research the different types of switches available because they can make a huge difference on whether they suit a person's particular needs or not. For example, I chose Mx Blue switches, and while I personally love them, I think they would be way too noisy for a person sharing office space with other people.

Only downside to mechanical keyboards I've found is that now when I have to type on my laptop or a regular keyboard it feels so mushy and weird that it throws me off at first.
