What is up with the default indie iPhone launch images? (sideways, unresponsive)

I'm building my game for generic iOS. Its default orientation is "autorotate" and it is playable in all 4 orientations.
For the iPad version, there are 4 Unity logo launch images, and they all work right.
But for the iPhone version, there are only two- standard and retina- and they are portrait-format images of a screen in Landscape Right orientation, with a larger Unity logo relative to the screen. The effect of that is: when you launch the game on an iPhone in portrait mode— which most people will, because that's how you hold a phone— you are greeted by a sideways launch image.

Why is it like this, and how can I fix it? I already asked Unity Answers and got no answer.

And am I the only one having this problem? It's always been like that. Should I report it as a bug?
Here's a screenshot of what I'm talking about:

Ok, if it's Apple's fault I won't worry about it any more.
But I still don't get why if iPhone only supports portrait mode launch images, and my game default orientation is auto-rotation, the default iPhone launch image would be a 90º rotated landscape image instead of a portrait image.

The reason the iPhone only supports portrait launch images is because all iPhone applications are launched in portrait mode. The home screen of the iPhone cannot be rotated into landscape mode.

There is something wrong. My portrait iPhone games have portrait Unity splash screens.
