    Is it actually possible that a living person could click on one of those spam threads and order something?

    You'd have to have downs or worse. All involved in the creation and distribution of this monstrosity should be culled with extreme prejudice :)

    The point of spambots is to give moderators something to do...otherwise we are liable to fall asleep on the keyboard out of boredom, and there's a chance of accidentally hitting the "delete entire forum" button if that happens. So you can see they serve a vital purpose.

    @121

    Just wondering, what's the significance of your name? Are you trying to go undercover in the spam bot world?

    I'd just like to know what makes the spam bots think that Unity users want to watch live sporting events. I mean, I enjoy sports, but it seems like a sports forum would be a better target for that spam.

    Well...they advertise a website which has ads on it = profit.

    And yeah, they make life of moderators more "fun"

    Doesn't it relate to just trying to boost search engine ranking by linking the websites all over the internet?

    But doesn't pretty much every forum use the nofollow tag, which makes spamming that forum for search engine purposes completely pointless?

    there's also the possible issue of display ads that guarantee a certain number of impressions or charge per impression. By spamming the links, chances are higher that other bots will find and follow them and artificially boost "impressions".

    On another note, Nebraska vs Purdue will be on BTN so I cam just stream it through their website. :)

    Bots aren't capable of understanding this. Let them dream ;)

    Unfortunately I do believe the revenue from this nonsense is more than the cost of running the bots :/

    Why is easy: If spam did not work, the spammers would stop making money from their efforts and move on to something else. It's as simple as that.

    Spam works. Spam makes a profit or accomplishes goals like infecting computers or messing with page ranks.

    It's the same with a lot of scams. Some people look at them and say, "Why would anyone fall for this?" If people weren't falling for it, the scammers would not still be using the techniques.

    Just look at the New York scam company the FTC says tricked people out of around $2,500,000.

    You do not have to be a complete moron to fall for a lot of spam or scams. Some people are simply naive. Some people fool themselves into thinking they're getting a good thing.

    Slightly off topic, but amusing: I used to have a coworker who when he was young worked for a company that drove around selling speakers out of the back of a van. Their sales pitch would imply that the speakers were stolen because people were actually more willing to pay if they thought they were getting a deal they really shouldn't have.
