Just started learning and I'm using MonoDevelop that came with Unity. Maybe there are other alternatives, but I wouldn't worry about having the perfect setup until you get deeper into C#. Focus on learning first and then you can find an IDE that suits your taste, in my opinion.

I was using Monodevelop but I switched to a different IDE after downloading Unity 5. This new IDE I use is Sublime Text. It's very good and there are very good reviews about it. The reason i switched to it is - I mainly use UnityScript(JS) for my games and I code occasionally in C#, with unity 5, unity dropped the support for boo language, this messed with Monedevelop, and many people who work with UnityScript started encountering lots of problem with it..

No. They kept it with Pro only.

I learned on and continue to use Monodevelop. It comes ready to go with autocomplete. Maybe I don't know what I'm missing, but it does everything I need and I never worry about it.

Dark is pro only. Its been a hot forum-wide controversy.

It's not that bad. The brightness can be irritating sometimes but this forums is even brighter.

When Unity 5 Personal Edition was announced, I switched my theme to the light theme to start to get used to it. It was pretty painful at first but it is OK now.

I use Visual Studio Ultimate. It had a bit of a learning curve but some Pluralsight courses really helped.

Why do people say Unity 5 theme is bright?

Its actually greyish which means it could never be too bright. Its no black but looks good to be no eye strain here as yet.

Visual Studio Pro 2013. There's no good reason to use anything else since VS has a free version. My only complaint is that debugging is spotty. The editor freezes a lot when debugging. It was happening in monodevelop too, so I don't think its VS specific.

Learn on MonoDevelop. Because it's already pre wired up to run when you install Unity.

Until it's available on Mac there's at least one perfectly good reason to use something else. ;)

Yeah, learn on whatever gets you going most quickly. Even though MonoDevelop has its... quirks, it's more than enough to learn on, and you should be focused on learning to code rather than letting yourself get distracted thinking about things like which glorified text editor has the fanciest features you're not yet ready to use.

Code is pretty awesome for a preview, but there's a bunch of stuff it's missing. And in any case, it's stated goal is to be a code-oriented text editor rather than a fully fledged IDE.
