Been wondering what game do you guys play the most? What do you play when you have free time or waiting for something.

Then ask yourself why are you addicted to it? What things make you play it over and over?

I guess I just like games that have high replay value. I know that's vague, but I'll try hard to describe what I mean.

Note: I'm a JRPG, SRPG and RPG fan as well, but I'm restricting my examples to Action/Horrors and Action/Adventure RPGs.

Take Resident Evil 1 and 2 for example. Sure, you can beat these games quickly (under 1-2 hours)... but there are different objectives to meet (for example, beating the game under a certain time, or performing certain actions to get a specific ending or bonus weapon, etc). Also, the puzzles in these games are refreshing because they're designed to make you focus on the puzzle as opposed to anything else such as zombies or other B.O.W.'s (in a sense, they typically feel like a safe area where you wont be disturbed and you have to complete the puzzle to progress further into the game). These games are also very fun to Stream or watch people Stream because of the interesting mechanics of the games (the hitboxes of zombies, Hunters, how effective certain guns/ammo is against a particular B.O.W., obtaining certain guns through puzzles/events, etc)

Zelda games (Ocarina of Time, Oracle of Seasons, Oracle of Ages, Links Awakening, etc). Even though they have a similar pattern of a young boy setting out on an adventure to defeat Ganondorf or some other enemy, and even though they have similar playstyles of earning and equipping weapons to complete dungeons and continue on an adventure, it's a formula that works really well. Each time I'm playing one of these games, I think to myself "what's the soonest I can do this particular event" or "I can't wait to get the [insert item name here]!" The games typically have a reasonable amount of diversity. Also, in Zelda games, different tools are more or less effective against different monsters (in OoS, OoA and LA there are monsters you will have trouble with using the Sword alone, such as the masked monsters with pointy helmets... but the Hookshot (or Magnetic Gauntlets in OoS) can snatch the mask off of these monsters and make them easier to deal with). My only gripe is the feeling where I'm getting closer to the end of the game, because I don't want the game to end! I just want to keep using the cool tools I've earned to do interesting combinations.

I guess I like games that have action in them, but also have some kind of puzzle(s) for me to solve to progress further into a game and some kind of growth (in the former examples, better weapons/equipment). It doesn't necessarily have to be through an experience/level system formula. Just some kind of means of making me feel stronger is enough.

I wouldn't say I'm addicted but I like doing my Hearthstone quests while processing my morning coffee.

It's easy to get in and out of. The interface is clean and simple and I can have it in the background while reading stuff, because the audio cues let me know when it's my turn.

    I'm a huge strategy fan.

300 hours in Civilization V and Europa Universalis 4 each. They're amazing games.

The replay value is huge in both, a new world, setup, and country for every game in Civ 5.
A new country, atmosphere, gameplan, goal, events, and etc in EU4.

Not really addiction calibur, but I find myself playing Muffin Knight whenever I find I have 5-10 minutes to kill out and about. Same thing at home when I'm taking a break (the TV edition at home). It's an easy thing to play in short spurts and its very replayable.

Rust. Because of that game, i didn't program anything for a month. I cant exactly say what makes it addictive, but i think its that you are never safe, and something will always happen, like an airdrop, raid, or just meeting other players, and in all of these events there will be always a risk. And during these, your heart will pound crazy because the excitement. But I really cant describe accurately what makes it addictive, so i would thank if another Rust player would exlpain it.

unless this is what Unity game are you addicted to, this should be closed off, or perhap be moved into the game design section

I had hard time deciding which forum this thread should belong to: Discussion or Game Design.

I chose Discussion because it doesn't seem to be related to...well...Game Design.

If anything it should be moved to Game Design, not closed.

    well, this :

belongs on a different forum.. its talking about being a gamer, rather than a game maker.. generally these sorts of subjects get closed off, because while we are all gamers, most of us dont come here to talk about what games you play in your own time.

this does make it more design/discussion...guess it is kind of both areas.. meh its monday... just ignore me.. just being over zealous I think

Should it? Game design sounds more focused and serious than "general discussion".

call of duty 2 was the last game i was addicted to lol... (cod4 wrecked what was good about cod.. made it too casual gamer)
most FPS games nowadays suck.. they dont have lean, and some dont have prone (wtf! no prone!? you serious? in gun combat, youd be prone like 80 percent of the time isnt it?) (farcry3.. dunno about farcry4, assume it doesnt have prone)

ive been playing red orchestra 2... its good.. but, somehow its like too realistic, its almost boring

path of exile i was sorta addicted to.. maybe? .. but moreso i was playing it so much because my friends were playing it alot.. something about it sucks lol... they like designed it to piss off players.

THOUSAND of hours into Mount & Blade: Warband, and that doesn't include the DLC and the original one.

Sandbox game, fun gameplay, tons of replay value, mods, multiplayer.

Just has the formula to be a life-destroying game... can't wait for Mount & Blade: Bannerlord, plus i'm getting the viking expansion too.

The game I got myself glued on? Virgin's Floor 13 (1991-92)

This caused me to confirm a new fact: In democratic societies, GTA-style crimes are actually aided to keep the existing elected government ahead of everybody else, but should not be traced back from the public as this may result in devastating requests for impeachment. In other words, felonies like the ones you see on papers daily, are governmental exploits that has to be hidden from the leader's eyes.

Don't have as much time to play as I used to so it's perhaps not quite an addiction.

    Cheers

Okay, I'll confess this here: I'm totally addicted to Team Fortress 2 (not a single day goes by without me playing it). Then there's this new Penguins of Madagascar game called Dibble Dash (it's basically a kids' game and my son loves playing it but I enjoy it too - haven't told him yet and don't plan to anyways) and of course Plants vs Zombies (my all-time favorite). There was an 'Angry Birds' era in my life when all I could think of was those birds but thankfully, I managed to survive that.

I tend to avoid games that are designed to be addictive rather than fun, engaging, or entertaining.

That said; I do love me some ARPG's like Diablo and Secret of Mana.

Shadow of Mordor, holy hell this game is good.

The story feels short, i feel like i'm getting near the finish, and i'm intentionally screwing around because I don't want to end.

The game is basically star wars: Medieval edition. and you play as a sith lord. the force choke is just fun

Path of Exile love this game. I`m also a big fan of Rpg so I`d like to play Lords of Xulima but I`m afraid that I`m gonna get sucked in for 100h :]
