What does one need to build a decent video game using Unity? can it be done with 1 man?

    The thing is I want to use Unity for my projects at school but I am wondering if something like Unity would be considered ok for a student since schools usually want you to know programming properly. From what I heard stuff like Unity makes everything too easy to build a game as all the programming is already done and you can even make games without any programming knowledge. Won't this then be frowned upon by a school?

    Sorry I am a noob and I am starting classes next week but I am very excited!!! I will have to do lots of C and C++ Programming but I believe these degrees are more about the actual science behind programming.

    I am watching some other unity games on youtube and the sky looks shockingly identical to that game in the video

    You all will know better if thats a unity Engine, if it is then I am going to start learning Unity right now!!!

    Well best thing would be to ask whoever is head there. Its true Unity does make it considerably easier to make something, but you still need to know programming. Unless you're following a copy paste tutorial. It depends on the school. I have 2 exams left and then graduation work and I'm hoping my professor lets me use Unity to make a game or something for it. I don't know if he will because honestly I'm way more knowledgeable in computer stuff than he is, so he might not comprehend what I'm saying, and reject it cause he doesn't understand, as people tend to do.

    EDIT: Yeah that's Unity's skybox.

    EDIT 2: And buttons. Sorry I'm posting as I watch.

    I think I saw the car model from the Unity car tutorial in there as well.

    edit: and I think that someone needs driving lessons :)

    Well this is excellent to know I had a gut feeling this was unity its so shockingly similar to other unity games on youtube. LOL well this is great news for me now I know I can use this Engine hee hee

    Well if you can write shaders in a C like language in Unity (CG, HLSL, GLSL), you're already pretty hardcore. Just because Unity uses a C# or JS scripting language, don't be fooled for a second it's an easy to use engine. Start breaking out of the mould and just like the rest of them you're in for a world of pain.

    It's just rarely do people peak this deep into the engine. All game engines are DX / GL renderers with tools bolted on to them, you choose the one that causes the least pain for your project.

    Aaah nice to hear I am glad unity is nothing easy and does require lots of skills and programming to build a proper 3d FPS, and I also just confirmed that my school uses Unity engine as you can seein this post I made where I recorded a student's driving simulator

    My main concern was that Engines would make game development too easy but the more I research it the more I realize it means little as one needs to be very competent to build a good game. In many ways I suspected it too aswell since if unity was ABC stuff then any tom dick and harry would be building games right.

    So this is good to know because my school prefers us to know some deep and proper programming skills. They don't like for things to be too easy for students as they think we should be punished. lol

    I got a question how would you guys rate that game for a university undergrad student final year project? is it what you would expect from a good North American or European university?

    Just for my own curiosity though, would you consider that game to be impressive for a student of undergrad? is it on the level that you would normally find with students from colleges at North American colleges? with the exception of the modeling part, I honestly have no clue how much effort in programming it takes for someone to make something like that and how impressive the effort is. BUT I would love to know!!

    I don't think I would be into game design if It was not for Unity.

    With the games I'm building, I have been using dozens of premade scripts and assets, however, it has still proven to be extremely difficult and time consuming. I cant imagine trying to build games by myself with other engines.

    I would recommend using as much premade assets and code as you possibly can. Don't worry about the people who say you should be using your own code and everything. Because once you pile in all of the premade scripts into your project, you will still find countless amount of work that has to be done manually.

    If you don't use any premade stuff, you may very well be stuck building a game for a dozen years.

    Aah thank you very much Roger. You pretty much summed it up quite well, I figured as much since its kind of like saying use notepad to build a software when in reality, in the industry everyone uses visual studio and eclipse etc. So I figured the same with an Engine sure it helps speed up things and make "life" easier but still requires tons of expertise in programming and the actual know how to program and a language and even some computer science or engineering maths to accomplish a number of things.

    I am happy this video turned out to be a Unity powered game it means we are allowed to use this software to create games at our university. This gives me tons of ideas now on what to do, I want my game to be a FPS with graphics like a playstation 3 game and good gameplay so I can get some money in the end. Even if I made $12,000 US in a entire year it would be a lot of money considering where I come from. I have no idea if I would make that much money and if I would even have a game worth selling for money.

    But I am embarking on a journey with a once in a lifetime opportunity go get my Degree so I can secure a Job and this is the primary goal of mine. I know with my degree I won't go homeless so passing my exams are my first step and securing a good Job if I can. If game design turns out to be profitable later on in life and I can assemble a team or something well all the better.

    Put your goals down a bit. You gotta start with an easy thing first. No, "PS3-graphical-like game".

    ^ would you say PS2 level?

    I will have to do all the modelling and I am no artist and I do not even own a wacom pen to draw. Is there still a possibility of doing these things without a pen tablet? like using free maya 3d or 3ds max models etc etc how do you guys go about getting the models etc?

    Modeling doesn't require a wacom pen or anything related to actual drawing(with the pen).

    So how do those companies get those characters and stuff in their games? with a mouse? how?

    wow now that is incredible I had no idea this is how it was done!!

    Holy molly all I need to do is actually put time and effort into this and I can actually be a 1 man army video game developer. And here I taught one had to be some sort of special gifted artist or something like that.

    Well this site has definitely proven to be a great help for me

    I use blender, cause its totally free... .. gimp for painting textures(or blender depending on detail) but i just found krita which looks Really nice, and also free

    i picked blender up really nice in like a week thanks to his videos..

    "pushy pixels" or "cooking with unity" helped me alot for unity, i like how he just comes up with the stuff off the top his head live, theyre long videos, but it was worth it for me..

    Modeling existed long before drawing tablets. You got it backwards cause modeling is done with mouse and keyboard most time. And in my experience its way easier. Tablets are for drawing. I use Blender for modeling and texture painting, Gimp for image manipulation, and Krita for painting. Why those and not Maya or 3DSMax or Mudbox or something? Because I intend to use my products commercially and I don't have a spare $10k laying around to get all that software.

    Whether it's okay or not depends on what exactly it is you're trying to achieve. If you're merely using Unity for visualizing/showcasing some form of algorithm/behavior/model that can be used in other places, it's okay.

    Ha. Haha. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
    Unity merely makes it easier. With all the tools in the world a game won't magically develop itself. ;)

    Would you mind telling me where I can find my unique game after installing Unity? Would have saved me a lot of time I wasted programming myself.
    As far as programming goes, game development has two aspects to it:
    Engine and game logic. Unity only ships the former.

    "Game" is a very broad term, you know.
    The complexity varies from project to project.

    Probably. There will always be some elitist douchebag that lacks confidence in his own work, so that he needs to talk S*** about others. ;)

    Trust me, this journey will not be practical. You can count on my experience. Once upon a time, I too thought of a God of war clone. I now know the complexity. So I urgently tell you to abstain. Form a team and specialize urself.

    But.... if your have enough time and money to survive 2-3 years, then why not. Start learning and deving now. You can learn a lot of thing.
    Unity is a great engine. I have not researched other engine enough to tell you comparative qualitative answer.
