What does "Evaluate" means in Unity technology?

    I can see the word "Evaluate" in some documents. It is used such as

    "State machine evaluation",
    " Layers are evaluated from top to bottom in order",
    "Unity evaluates the Animation system",

    and I wonder exactly what "Evaluate" means.

    Like evaluating a mathematical equation.

    Update, apply, execute, or run would also be appropriate.
