Maybe so - but Unity's champions are the small time devs who made it big, their brand is 'game development for the masses'. In terms of their customer base, their ideal story is probably more like Crossy Road.

Which is not strange, big studios use inhouse engines mostly

    Unfiltered brain dump:

The ideal story is that an AAA company uses Unity because that is the chief reason anyone, ever, uses UE4. Not because it's easier (it really isn't) but because it's inspiring that professional companies choose it. Anyone here can make crossy road. Unfortunately, that's not inspiring. At all.

@zombiegorilla making games for Disney in Unity was inspiring. We need more higher profile tales. I mean I'm getting bored of yet another indie stumbling across Unity and pooping out whatever. Where's the big guys? where's the balls?

You don't need Unity in the slightest to make crossy road. No offence is meant for the developers but it is pretty much frogger with bells on, and isn't an advert for Unity. It might even imply that's all Unity is good for.

But Capcom choosing an engine for their flagship title? Says a lot. They did try to use Unity but the result was some kind of horror S*** show with no stability. Understandable as Unity wasn't really up to it back then.

If it sounds like I'm being mean to Unity, I'm not trying to, I'm just giving personal unfiltered unbiased perception from a certain perspective. After all, I do use Unity.

Well, a option is a new intro logo give by Unity for good games choice by them, some like "Unity Official Selection"

Why do I need Unity's approval..? will they market my game enough to compensate for the addition of a logo?

Why would a company that doesn't make games be the judge if it's good or not? Maybe they'd pick favourites? how would everyone else feel?

I think Made With Unity is a pretty good thing as far as that goes.

More than a approval a recomendation, a spotlight. "Unity Spothlight" is fine for me.

I see... so they recommend some games but not others. Likely, they would want to recommend games that already have a budget because those have more chance of being good games. A budget that already can afford the removal of the splash.

So how would Unity's recommendation lead to enough sales that it warrants carrying an extra splash? Doesn't Unity already do this with Unite awards?

Good. Probably thought it was utterly absurd the logo would even be a problem. Might have to buy that game. Not because of the logo or Unity, but because it looks like a lot of fun.

    5 devs? awesome work.

Shame I can't give two thumbs up!

    This is
I think that all Unity project have a ID and is technically possible make this, activate a new logo for builds, this recomendation is indepent from developer plan or license, you submit your request for the "Unity Spotlight" label logo and Unity can give or not. This can be a option for separate some good Unity games from thousands of Unity bad games.

Yes, in this example if i am a Unity Spotlight curator D.R.O.N.E will be a game with the Unity Spotlight label in the game intro.

I enjoy very much see the Unity Awards but this is a Post release game recognition, a Unity Spotlight program can be a pre-release game recognition.

Yep, and consumers need to understand that ignorance is why women were burned at stakes and racism exists. Ignorance is to be fought. The masses need to accept that it's shameful to be stupid.

And by stupid, I mean that exact behaviour.

    They're not consumers, though.

People often use youtube comments to say something outrageous and then feel special because they did that.

Those people are noise. Or a "loud minority" at best.

The more that dev's release ambitious, well playing / good looking games in Unity the more the status quo will change.. If Unity keep assisting us to do so with performance enhancements, bug squashing, tools etc. the more it will happen.

Unity 5.X is already a different ball game to Unity 4.X, hopefully it will continue in that direction.. Ok, Ok, that's enough time spent in a "debate" thread.. I'll save my post count for the next UE4 vs. Unity thread :D..

Valve used Unity for The Lab and all the games in it except for the Robot Repair demo since they had made that one before they started using Unity. The SteamVr setup system (where you calibrate everything and set up chaperone) is Unity too. The Steam VR 3d UI system, the background environments, that's also Unity.

They used their own real time shadow solution etc though. Sad that they didnt continue to support The Lab renderer, it could have been something big. Its real time shadows looks better than vanilla Unity

Scriptable Render Pipeline will be a game changer for things like valve renderers and most likely will attract medium sized studios with a few million in the bank.

This is because having a source license is expensive. Not because of the licensing itself, but because it costs you a lot of time-is-money figuring it out, working with it and so on. I don't doubt Unity very much assists with getting to grips with it using support, but having the ability to use a stable build and heavily modify it without tearing out the guts is practically the holy grail of generic game engines.

Whoever thought to overhaul Unity with it, is a smart cookie. Can't wait to see what comes of it!

Heck, we've all gone way off topic. But the original topic sucked, and people are happily contributing so why not.

It's not even an asset flip.

It's literally just "a game that uses assets from the store."

    Also who the hell cares?

Comments are pretty toxic. Is it not possible to prevent comments? I find it saddening, because I've developed and programmed since the 8 bits, far before these kids were born, and I see absolutely no problem with using any engines, Unity included.

Games aren't about cpu temps, they're about having pleasure.

It should already be possible to wire in a custom renderer, it is just it is not "trivial" to do so.

But, guys, sometimes the engine actually is at fault. I remembered this bug that I filed, it did get resolved, but it took its sweet while.

Also 5.5.2 or 3 i think it was was a complete mess when it came to PBR. Oh and then there was that problem with singel pass rendering in 5.4

    @AndersMalmgren

That goes for all engines though chief (most software TBH), UE4 has an odd shadow bias thing going on at the moment.. A short while back it had a habbit or resetting all your BP's to default settings.. I've had cooking issues / UI issues and I nearly re-wrote half the renderer because overdraw / foliage sunk the framerate.. LY froze to a grinding halt when I changed the HM orientation..

It's part and parcel of the job, all things considered Unity (well Unity 5.X) is performant and pretty stable across the board.. I am gaining more and more respect for it.

Whether it seems like it or not, I am at a fringe value taking all this with a pinch of salt.. There is much bigger fish to fry.. Gotta give kudos to the developer of that thread you posted though, after all the nitpicking / insults etc. the dev's are dealing with it respectfully..

Hobbyist seems more appealing by the day..

Yep, every engine has its issues. It's up to us as developers to work around them as best we can to produce the best game we're able to make.

That reminded me of unreals nasty habit of wiping out DataClasses you saved if you change underlying C++ data class. I think that one wasn't ever fixed. Then again, in unity I had a similar issue with scriptable objects losing all saved data if those were originally copied with Ctrl+D. I think I even reported that one, but I'm not sure.

I agree that "Dead Purge: Outbreak" appear to be a game that uses assets but is not an asset flip. I watched the video but I have not played the game, so I cannot say for sure. But this appears to be a case where some people are calling it an asset flip simply because it contains assets. Does "Dead Purge: Outbreak" use entire demo scenes from the assets, or does it just use 3D models and textures?

A big part of the problem with term "Asset Flip" is the lack of a clear definition. For some people, any game they don't like is an asset flip. For others, any game made with Unity is an asset flip. And there are those who feel any game with any 3rd party assets is an asset flip. And of course, there is the original definition where any game that is just an unmodified asset pack is an asset flip, such as all of those games that were literally just the demo scene from the UnitZ asset pack.

Some people think that any game that does not contain 100% original content (models, textures, sounds, music, code, etc) is an asset flip. Those people don't realize that even their favorite games were made using popular game engines and (in most cases) at least some assets and code were re-used from other projects, developed by a 3rd party for the game, or purchased through an asset store. Even at the AAA level, I don't think there would be an example of a game where everything was 100% unique for that single game.

I haven't seen a film that contains 100% original content. Certainly not from Disney which happily used the same cels painted over and over again.

Time people grew up I think.

Asset Flip is a meaningless term. It's born from trying to sell a demo scene that came with an asset from the asset store.

Using assets is a perfectly valid thing to do. What all these youtubers are doing, is simply making indies life harder and harming the asset store business model by encouraging their audiences to attack everything in sight mindlessly.

Maybe everyone should code everything from scratch too? Perhaps youtubers would like the source code to check? Or maybe it's an asset flip to even use a game engine, since other people use the same ones.

Actually, my game doesn't use asset store, but I can't help but feel for people who do.

They should give it a rest, it's helping nobody in the age of refunds.

Maybe Blizzard is guilty of asset flips because you purchase expansion packs at full retail price and they reuse assets from one of the many other expansion packs or original game over.... and over.... and over again.

And people keep paying for content they already paid for.

Oh wait, maybe Blizzard is too big to attack. Therefore this is bullying solo devs, and I've had enough.

Would love to have a response from popular youtubers to my comments. Because currently, I don't think their behaviour makes any sense.

Reusing some assets within reason must be acceptable because as games grow, even the biggest team in the world cannot keep up. It is illogical and stupid to insist on unique assets for every game going forward. It would actively reduce quality in the end.

Certainly if it is obnoxious it must be called to task, but there's this thing called common sense. Wish people had it.

That is pretty intense... and insane... and revealing. The comments on that second YT video for D.R.O.N.E where people are just blasting the hell out of Unity and defending it and asking "but how is it possible in Unity" to do this. I think the comments there alone pretty much answers the question "does Unity have an image problem?"

But Jim.... man he is getting truly nuts. He alluded to this kind thing in other videos but now he is just coming right out and saying it... if you are using graphics assets you did not make yourself then it is an Asset Flip. That is truly insane.

What kind of sense does it make? I know he is talking about buying assets that are already made but what in hell does it matter if a person buys a garbage can, fence, zombie models, gun whatever or in a small team one of the people creates those? Or will he eventually get to the point where even that is wrong? lol I mean it is just.. weird really. Mainly where he mentions the developer(s) didn't make the art themselves and rambles on it a bit. My first thought is so what if they had contracted out the art to artists. They still wouldn't be making it themselves so is that still bad? Is that still laziness?

Normally I don't care what his views are on things in general (and he is entertaining at times) but truly to expect everyone create completely new work in full for every game (do the AAA companies even do that for all of their sequels?). Will that eventually apply to the engines themselves? "Ah here is another flip... yet another game using UE or another game using Unity!! I don't know why these lazy developers aren't writing their own game engines! It's just sad". lol

    LOOL what about DYNASTY WARRIORS!!!

Jim Sterling loves dynasty warriors... they reuse assets ALL THE TIME!! they basically just make a few new maps and call it a new game, tweak the gamemodes a LITTLE and make new animations and moves SOMETIMES

and like all these things listed as "expansions" ... those arent what i call like an expansion pack, those are totally "new releases" .. but they add like hardly anything to them...
