    Hello!

The title sorta says it all in my opinion, I would just like to know if there are any good 3D character creation programs for a beginner (which is me) to use.

    Thanks!

    Blender = is a free character/object modelling software. http://www.blender.org/
Lots of Blender Beginner tuts on the internet.

Maya = is a Paid modelling software program http://www.autodesk.com/products/maya/overview

Carrera 8.5 is a paid for, modelling software. http://www.daz3d.com/carrara-software/

Makehuman is nice and free also. http://www.makehuman.org/
You can almost easily make your own, near realistic human/monster human character, boy/girl, a fat man
or a muscular man/woman in less than a few minutes.
Move the sliders and you can make a character fat or skinny etc.
Or make them look like an Alien or monster. :D
    Good for beginners too.
Has a nice forum if you need help.

Daz Studio is Free and similar to Makehuman.
But you have to buy, any new features or base character models that you want.
    http://www.daz3d.com/products/daz-studio/daz-studio-what-is-daz-studio

    There are lots more too.

    Hope that helps.

There's also Mixamo Fuse that has improved quite a bit since its initial release: https://www.mixamo.com/fuse/

It's not very low poly though so I wouldn't use it for mobile games.

I'd suggest Blender as it's free and has a ton of functionality that puts it almost on par with 3dsmax / Maya. Not to mention it's also widely used by a lot of people in the industry so you won't have any trouble finding help on it.

Blender is great, but on its own, you will have to learn 3d modelling in general. If you want quick and easy(though not perfect) I suggest MakeHuman. The catch to MakeHuman is that you will generally want to make changes so will have to know some modelling anyway. Also, the model is pretty high poly so depending on your purpose and the performance of your target platform it may not work out of the box.

In any case, Blender is a great suggestion. It is quite fully featured, and it is free, and it is getting more features over time too. Lastly, it works pretty well with Unity.

I like Fuse a little better than MakeHuman for a beginner mostly because there are a lot more clothing options. I got Fuse for $20 or $25 on sale. I think it is regular $100. You only get two free autorigs per week but that is currently more than enough for me. It is easy to add animations from Mixamo's website but they get expensive quick.

It is always good to learn a general modelling program like Blender to customize your model and/or animate. Programs like Substance Painter make it pretty easy to customize the texturing.

3ds Max is cool too, since you can use it now and also in the future when you need advance features, like, forever

Best option for a beginner in my opinion is adobe Fuse CC. It starts you off with a basic model and you can go in and change each feature and make it your own model. Requires no 3D modeling background at all. Really good for beginners with no experience.

Are any of them parametric? I mean, can we use dimensions to control the shapes? I need to create many different people based on their body measures. So, I was thinking I could create a base model, then just change dimensions to create another model.

I know that this post is quite outdated, but I would recommend Daz 3D with Unity Multipurpose Avatar System (UMA). Both are free to use (at the release of your game you should buy license for Daz 3D) and Secret Anorak recently made complete Daz to UMA course.

If it's human characters you are trying to make, try makehuman.
