    From our press release today:

Tony has actually been working with us a bit already and I can easily say that he's been an awesome additional right from the start. He has some incredible industry contacts and a solid head on his shoulders with respect to helping us plan out a long-term business development plan. Tony will work closely with our sales department so they can help expand our user base, from students/hobbyists on up to large studios and development shops.

    Welcome aboard Tony!

does this mean unity is going to go the subscription route? ie pay per month/year on a subs basis?

Why would this news mean that Unity is going subscription route?

Well...I was looking around for game engines that allow render to texture (because I can't afford unity pro right now) which leaves me ok working with unity indie for a space type project, which is why i bought the indie license, and I came by this Blade3D engine.
The first thing i noticed was "ooh! you subscribe" ie users pay something each month via direct debit and you can choose which package suits you.
As i was looking into the details i noticed that Tony garcia has been very busy with Blade3D,so I thought maybe he might be thinking of doing something the same for unity.

Tony's hiring news has zero bearing on production directions like that, apples and oranges. Tony has been brought on to help out with business development based on his prior experience, contacts, etc.

Completely separate from Tony I'll note that we are not considering a move to subscription licensing for the general commercial developer population. We are looking at term based licensing in the educational space so you may see movement there, but again, not for commercial users.

I'm not Tony, but I don't think he's actually here on our forums with an account so I figure I'll offer a reply to help out.

Yes, he left Blade3D and then after that fact we began chatting with him and scooped him up.

    His to answer, sorry.

Catch up on the news from earlier this month:

    Blade3D Transition
    Subscription-Based Blade3D Engine 'Winding Down'

Then of course our response to that news:

    Unity Bailing Out Blade3D Customers

I sense that Eric's point was along these lines: you can buy now, start getting used to the application then get the 2.6 upgrade for free (if you buy today you'll buy 2.5.1, all updates in the 2.x family will be free anyway).

    Either way, your call. :)
