weird particle system bug, what am I missing?

    Im trying to use a particle system to implement blast craters in a strategy-like game.

    I set up a particle system at 0,0,0, and then use script to emit particles at the required locations. That works as expected, however, there is a strange side-effect, huge particles start to cover the screen.

    can someone help me? what am i missing?
