We are up to Unity 5 and no configurable download folder for asset store packages?

It is extremely annoying not been able to configure the download location for asset store packages.
I know there are alternatives on how to do it, but why we are up to Unity 5 and no easy way to change the folder out of the box

On Windows you can create a symbolic link to redirect where the files are stored.

    Code (csharp):
    1. MKLINK /D "%APPDATA%\Unity\Asset Store-5.x" "Path to New Folder Location"

I know that, what I meant is how the heck is possible that the engine is supposed to be so advanced and still does not have an out of the box feature to configure the download location from the app itself.

I recommend creating a blank project in the future for any asset you have yet to actually use. That way if it does something bizarre you won't lose a lot of time trying to correct things. I don't know of any automated way to remove the changes.

It would be nice to have such feature - (automated way to remove packages with changes they made).

Add to that a package manager like system for versioning from the asset store. It could be more like a repo and can remove unused plugin files from new versions, allowing more control for asset store developers to make sure updates are more atomic.

The dialog after importing should have the ability to place the root of the asset store assets within your asset folder/project. It should also place them in a common folder at the root like 'libs' or 'assetstore' or 'thirdparty' or something by default as well if none specified to separate it from your project.

What is annoying is if you want to move the assets around then reimport/update versions you can run into organizational tasks. It would be great to have a versioning system and ability to change the path so you didn't have to check outside the editor or move things around upon updates etc.

I share many assets between many projects and install plugins to common submodule repos, every time I have to remove, reimport, move to the old location etc.
