Been paying close attention to the new Windows 8 news.

I'm really hoping Unity3D and Microsoft can get together and add official 1st class support for Unity3D games on Windows 8 and the Windows 8 Marketplace.

I know Unity3D already supports Windows and therefore will be somewhat supported in Windows 8 just due to the Windows 8 backward compatibility with Windows 7.

What I'm talking about is support for games on the Windows 8 Arm based tablets, ability to submit Unity3D games to new Windows 8 marketplace, ability to create XBOX Live titles... etc.

unity already can create xbox live and xbox titles no prob there

only unsupported platform is xbox live indie and that will not change as unity is not .net xna based but native code which just doesn't run there

Yep, I know that, but Window8 and the new Window8 AppStore are a new beast that would, I'm pretty sure, require a new build target for Unity3D. The new Windows 8 AppStore will operate much like the iOS and the Mac AppStore. Apps will not be XNA/.Net, they will be WinRT which is build on top of DirectX

See here for more info: http://www.infoq.com/news/2011/09/WinRT-API

Note, XNA and .Net are really not a factor for what I'm talking about.

let's first wait till win8 is available in definite form. Than wait a bit longer to see how it adapts.

I agree with this. Window 8 app store looks like it has HUGE potential. To create a Metro game (different then a regular windows game, making it available to the app store) the game uses C++ and DirectX 11.1, this seems very possible for Unity. And the earlier we adapt, the more potential to grab the new wave of customers.

They are at an Impasse with MS for special native code capabilities on WP7. Unless MS changes it's mind, WP7 is not a possibility without a massive rewrite and performance loss of Unity.

The good point is that it's even impossible to install xna on windows 8. You can only install visual studio 2010 express for windows phone without xna. So if they want games on windows phone 7 and windows phone 8, I think they will allow c++/directx 11 games on windows phone.
