Speaking of FlowCanvas/NodeCanvas vs Bolt 1/2 -- nobody seems to remember mentioning Behavior Trees?

Behavior Trees are the only way to (currently) handle complex state systems.
These don't get enough love. :(

I believe in the future there will be DOTS VS no playmaker, no bolt, no FC, no NC (these others would have to change with the times whenever that time comes), which I’m sure is a long way off.

That's a very far future, like 2-3 years from now. Right now, the only options are to wait for bolt 1 to get good, buy something else (I do recommend FC + NC too, these are the best VS tools unity does have), or to use a different game engine.

As a software engineer that develops tools for game developers I find this line of thinking unacceptable. Just because something is affordable doesn't mean that I, nor any other developer selling an asset, should be content with buggy software. People expect products to be functional, and if a bug is discovered for that bug to be fixed within a timely manner.

Completely misinterpretation of my words. But that's not my problem.
