I've been using Unity for some time now and with each updates, I've been wondering, is there an updater like in most games' clients where you only download the patch instead of re-downloading the entire thing?

Currently, I'm using Unity 4.3.4f1 and I'm downloading unity 4.5.5 at the moment and I find it inconvenient to download another 1.2GB software while practically abandoning the old version.

The Unity Editor Update Check just sends me to a download section to download the entire thing. Is there a way to update without downloading the entire thing?

Most likely. I just downloaded Unity 4.5.5 and I had to uninstall my old one. Even if I didn't have to uninstall, I still had to download the entire program again for 4.5.5. because I couldn't find a different method of updating

Currently we just package up complete builds, so typically are all over 1GB. We know this isn't great, so have some approaches we will roll out with 5.x

Thank you for replying and I'm looking forward for 5.x. the feature preview is spectacular.

actually, i prefer the way it is.. then you can have multiple versions installed at once... particularly theres some examples and tutorials and stuff that only run correctly on older versions.. (i guess pre 4?) i cant remember exactly..

@CaoMende777, I suspect that will still work. A 5.x install won't automagically update to latest. And all the old versions you have installed will still work as they do today.
