    Hi,

I just updated to the newest version of Unity but somehow Monodevelop is missing. Only Visual Studio is available in the settings menu as "external script editor". Can someone tell me how to get Monodevelop to work?

    thanks,
    Joost van Poppel

ah ok, I liked MonoDevelop, but VS is allright as well.
On startup of Visual Studio I get the warning: "License: 30 day trial / evaluation period has ended.".
I thought it was free? (no other MS products on my PC besides W10)

Oh joy, so now I'm forever going to have to put up with Visual Studio Community Edition refusing to boot up because "This account has been suspended, possibly because of spam, please input phone number so we can text you an unlock code" every 3 days?

    -_- That's just great.

As someone who doesn't own a mobile phone, it's a tremendous pain to get around this, only to have it happen again a few days later. Whether I re-unlock my account with a phone, or set up a whole new account, it just keeps happening to me and makes developing in Visual Studio a nightmare.

Never had that issue... but you can always use vscode or rider, there are options.

You can use really any IDE. You can even use Mono from earlier Unity versions. It just isn't supported anymore, and probably won't work very well in the long term.

As an artist on the rare occasion I did have to open code I prefer it be in monodevelop as it was less of a hassle. I assume there was a good reason to nix it.

Their reasoning was MonoDevelop didn't play nice with the new .Net 4.6 runtime, especially debugging support.

    That's a big loss.
MonoDevelop autocomplete / intellisense is vastly superior to Visual Studio for speed of development.
Using Visual Studio adds about 15-30% extra time to code editing (for me, anyway).
    I've used both extensively.

There are three different options when it comes to code editors (VS, VS Code and Rider). You also setup any external code editor you wish for yourself if none of those is good enough for you. It is up to you.
